Nebraska sportsbooks officially launched in 2023, but unlike many neighboring states, wagering is restricted to in-person bets at licensed retail casinos. Under current state law, online sportsbooks are not allowed to operate anywhere in the Cornhusker State.

Fortunately, legal alternatives exist through social sportsbooks. These sites avoid real money gambling by using virtual currencies instead. You can make sports predictions with Gold Coins or Sweeps Coins, and eligible Sweeps Coin winnings may be redeemed for cash prizes. Our recommended social sportsbooks are listed in the banners here, where you can sign up and claim a welcome bonus.

Yes, sportsbooks are legal in Nebraska - but not in the way most sports bettors would hope for. On May 26, 2021, Governor Pete Ricketts signed LB 561 into law, officially legalizing retail-only sports betting in the state. Nearly two years later, on June 22, 2023, Nebraska's first sportsbooks opened and began accepting wagers.

However, we need to make something perfectly clear: online sports betting is still illegal in Nebraska. State law allows sports wagering only at licensed casinos and racetracks, meaning you must place your bets in person. You cannot legally use online sportsbooks or mobile betting apps while physically located in Nebraska, so traditional sportsbook bonuses are off limits.

There have been multiple attempts to expand sports betting to include online and mobile wagering through legislation and potential ballot measures, but none of those efforts have passed so far.

List of sportsbooks in Nebraska

Nebraska's most popular retail sportsbooks are located at the WarHorse Casino properties in Lincoln and Omaha. In addition, two other casinos in the state offer retail sports betting.

Here is the complete list of legal sportsbook locations in Nebraska:

SportsbookAddress
WarHorse Casino Lincoln7055 S 1st St, Lincoln, NE 68512
WarHorse Casino Omaha6303 Q St, Omaha, NE 68117
ELITE Sportsbook at Grand Island Casino Resort700 E Stolley Park Rd, Grand Island, NE 68801
Caesars Sportsbook at Harrah’s Racing & Casino5944 Howard Blvd, Columbus, NE 68601

You must be 21 years or older to visit any of these locations, and you must be physically present to place a wager. While some states - such as Mississippi - allow on-site mobile betting within casino property, Nebraska does not allow this option.

In Nebraska, all sports bets must be placed in person, either at the sportsbook counter or through self-service kiosks. Therefore, Nebraska does not allow state-licensed online sports betting under any circumstances.

When will online sportsbooks go live in Nebraska?

It's hard to say for sure. Lawmakers tried to legalize online sports betting in 2025 through a bill called LB 421, which would have allowed racetrack casinos to offer mobile betting statewide, but that effort failed when the bill stalled in committee and never advanced.

In 2026, the focus has shifted to a constitutional amendment called LR 20CA. This proposal would let Nebraska voters decide whether to allow online sports betting in the November 2026 election. Before that can happen, though, the resolution must still pass the Legislature. And even if it does, voters would still have to approve it.

Because of these hurdles, it's safe to say online sports betting is not coming to Nebraska anytime soon. If everything goes perfectly, the earliest realistic launch for legal online sportsbooks would be 2027. Nothing has been confirmed yet, though. Nebraska sports betting timeline

The US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, and here is how Nebraska sports betting has unfolded since then:

  • 2018: The US Supreme Court overturns PASPA, giving each state the authority to legalize sports wagering.
  • 2020: Nebraska voters approve three ballot initiatives allowing casino gambling and sports betting at licensed racetracks.
  • 2021: Governor Pete Ricketts signs LB 561, officially legalizing retail sports betting in Nebraska.
  • 2022: The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission drafts sportsbook regulations and begins licensing operators.
  • 2023: The first retail sportsbooks open at WarHorse Casino in Lincoln and Omaha.
  • 2024: Caesars Sportsbook launches at Harrah's Racing & Casino in Columbus.
  • 2025: LB 421 is introduced to legalize statewide mobile sports betting, but stalls in committee and fails to advance.
  • 2026: LR 20CA is introduced, aiming to put online sports betting on the November 2026 ballot.

Best online sportsbook alternatives in Nebraska: Social sportsbooks

Because real money online sports betting is illegal in Nebraska, you cannot place bets at traditional sportsbooks like DraftKings or FanDuel while inside the state. However, there is a legal alternative: social sportsbooks.

Social sportsbooks are allowed to operate in Nebraska and many other restricted states because they use a "no purchase necessary" sweepstakes model. Since no real money wagering takes place, these sites do not meet Nebraska's legal definition of gambling. You can explore free sports betting sites that operate legally under this model.

Instead of wagering real money, you use virtual currencies. On most sites, these are called Gold Coins (GC) and Sweeps Coins (SC).

  • Gold Coins are used purely for entertainment. You can win more Gold Coins by making correct predictions, but they cannot be redeemed for prizes, regardless of how many you accumulate.
  • Sweeps Coins are the promotional currency used in sweepstakes mode. Eligible winnings from Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for prizes such as cash or gift cards, subject to the terms and conditions.

If you want to make the most of these platforms, our free picks can help you make sharper predictions whether you're playing in Gold Coin or Sweeps Coin mode.
