The Nittany Lions finished the season at 11-2 and in the playoffs they dominated SMU and Boise State, not the best two teams in the playoffs. Penn State has an efficient offense despite the lack of big play capabilities. Their defense has been outstanding this season. Notre Dame finished at 11-1 with their only loss, to Northern Illinois, is still hard to explain. They were dominant with wins over Indiana and Georgia in their playoff wins. The Stats and metrics of the Irish win over Georgia were not impressive. They were outgained by 52 yards, were just four of 14 on third downs, gained a total of 244 yards, and averaged merely four yards per play. Notre Dame's defense was outstanding so there was no real reason for Notre Dame to take chances as they had the game in hand. They relied on their running game for long time consuming drives to drain the clock and limit a Georgia offense that struggled all game to move the ball. Both teams are rushing for over 200 yards per game.
