The Rangers are coming into this game off of a great season which they ended up losing to the Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals. They have been one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference over the last few seasons and they have a lot of their core group returning for another year. They are going to be hungry to dominate the Eastern Conference once again and they have plenty of firepower on this offense so they will try to come out strong and get a good start to the season. They are going up against a Penguins team that was not great last season as they failed to make the playoffs at all. That is going to be a focus for them this season though as they still have plenty of veteran talent on the team. They are also going to be looking for a strong start to the season and they will get up for this home opener. These two met 3 times last season and 2 of the 3 games had 7+ goals total. Each of their last 2 meetings had 7+ goals total in them, including a 7-4 win for the Rangers their last meeting in Pittsburgh. The Rangers have a lot of quality in their offensive lines, but their defense has taken a step back this season and the Penguins will be able to create scoring chances at home. The Rangers do have a lot of speed on their team though so they will also create scoring chances against this older defensive group for the Penguins. The Penguins will be looking to set the tone early in this home game but the Rangers will be looking to do the same and neither side is going to be so quick to lay down and die after falling behind. Between these two sides, there will be enough goals in this game to push it over the total.
