Michigan State's defense will shine in this game, as Central Michigan does not possess a passing game capable of putting the Spartans on their heels. Jase Bauer struggled with interceptions last year and Bert Emanuel has completed just four passes in his collegiate career. Should the latter get most of the reps, Michigan State will hone in on the run, with its defensive line and linebackers overpowering the Chippewas' offensive line. The Spartans' pass rush could also blow up on Friday.
The MSU offense shouldn't have too many issues moving the football, no matter who starts at QB. My guess is Noah Kim's knowledge of the offense and dual-threat ability get him the start, with Katin Houser coming in for a series or two in relief if the score allows. Expect the home team to rely on its stable of running backs to open up the pass, opting for a hot-hand approach at RB. Nathan Carter has drawn rave reviews in camp for his big-play ability and Jaren Mangham/Jalen Berger are goal-line threats, as are big-body pass-catchers Maliq Carr and wide receiver Christian Fitzpatrick.
The Spartans have one of the toughest schedules in the nation, with games against Washington, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State. On Friday, any worries about those matchups will seem miles away, as MSU will cover the 13.5-point spread against in-state foe CMU.
