Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman's struggles against NC State are well-documented (six picks in three games). NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson's 3-3-5 defense has had his number, holding him to an average PFF passing grade of 73.1 in those three games. The Irish have not played a team of the caliber of the Wolfpack this season and may be in for a rude awakening if they think they'll coast through another game on the road.
NC State QB Brennan Armstrong is athletic, but his o-line struggled against UConn, as he faced pressure on 37.8 percent of his dropbacks last week. With only two returning starters, the line's below-average performance isn't shocking. It will struggle to create open space in the run game and protect Armstrong against Notre Dame's front seven tomorrow. Last season, the Wolfpack averaged just 3.3 yards per carry (111th nationally in Offensive Line Yards)... The Irish return eight defensive starters, including all three of their star LBs, and added quality talent to the d-line and secondary through the transfer portal.
NC State will struggle to run the ball, putting all the pressure on Armstrong to attack the ND secondary. He can sling it, but not so much with consistent pressure in his grill. Hartman is going to toss at least one pick too — his impressive streak of 11 TD drives in 12 possessions won't continue.
I believe the total points will be closer to 44-45, leaving us room for a winning under bet at 50.5 and down to 49!
