This is an 8* BLOWOUT on Utah.
For a number of different reasons I expect Utah to pull away down the stretch for the comfortable ATS cover. Colorado State won't have Mountain West Coach of the Year in Jim McElwain on Saturday when it faces off against the 23rd-ranked Utes in the Las Vegas Bowl. McElwain accepted the Florida job following his old team's first 10-win season since 2002. After a two-year absence, Utah is back in the postseason and I think makes the most of it. The Rams of course would lose to Air Force 27-24 on November 28th in their final regular season game of the year. Colorado State is led by QB Garrett Grayson who paces an attack that ranked 12th overall in the country in total offense. However, the Rams run smack dab into a Utes' defensive unit which led the nation in sacks (52) and allowed just 245 YPG through the air, ranking third in the Pac-12. So as good as Colorado State was this year, when comparing the actual competition that each team faced this season, there's no question that the Utes schedule was much more grueling. Four of Utah's losses came against ranked opponents, with a quality 30-28 victory at then No. 8 UCLA on October 4th thrown into their resume. The Utes would also demolish another Mountain West foe on September 6th, annihilating Fresno State 59-27. The Rams on the other hand did not even play a ranked opponent and have lost their last 15 games vs. teams from the Top 25. Utah QB Travis Wilson would go the first eight games of the year without throwing an INT and would finish the season with 17 TD's and four give-aways. But look for the Utes to establish the run today, Colorado State would give up at least 100 yards rushing in every game and ranked seventh in the Mountain West in allowing 187.6 YPG on the ground. That has to be music to Devontae Booker's ears, the Utah back would finish with 1,350 yards and nine TD's in the regular season. When I look at each of these teams from top to bottom and what each accomplished throughout the season, in my opinion, it's true that Colorado State has gotten more of the headlines for what it's done this year, but there's no question which is the more complete team and I think it's this depth which will ultimately prove to the be the difference in the outcome at the end of the day; play on UTAH.
