This is an 8* O/U COAST-TO-COAST EXPRESS on the OVER between the LA Kings and the New Jersey Devils.
This is the lowest total I've seen all year, I can't recall having seen a 4.5 yet this season, but even if it was 5, I'd still love this play, while neither of these teams has been playing to many high-scoring affairs of late, I believe the conditions are now right for a higher-scoring shootout and expect this total to eclipse the tiny number sooner than later in this one. LA has still not run down a playoff spot yet and it'll be desperate to put some points on the board after losing two straight and three of its last four. The Kings have gone 5-5-2 in their last 12: "It's not a given that you get into the playoffs. You've got to work for it," Kings' captain Dustin Brown said after a 4-1 home loss to the Canucks on Saturday. "We've struggled at times this year, but our confidence and our belief hasn't wavered. We're still in control of our own destiny. We play a lot of these teams that we're battling with for a playoff spot, and people expect us to be there. But we have to earn it." Note that the Kings have scored just five goals over their last four games after scoring at least four in all but one of their previous five outings. A date on the road though is just what the doctor ordered for LA, it's 7-2-1 in its last ten away from friendly confines and with a game tomorrow night in New York, it definitely puts added emphasis onto this evening's contest. The Devils won't just be rolling over here, while their playoff hopes are slim, they've already beaten LA 5-3 on January 14th for their second straight win in the series and fourth in the past five. New Jersey will also be extra motivated to get back to its winning ways after a listless 3-0 setback to the visiting Islanders on Saturday, the loss snapped a three-game streak: "I think it's that time of year where you're going to get a team's best," Devils' forward Stephen Gionta said afterwards. "We knew coming in that (the Islanders) were going to be a little desperate, having lost four in a row. ... It's a frustrating and disappointing loss." Note that LA has seen the total go OVER the number in six of nine this year after a loss by two goals or more, in ten of 16 after allowing four goals or more and in seven of 11 in revenging a home loss vs. an opponent. And note that New Jersey has seen the total sail above the posted number in 12 of 20 after a loss by two goals or more in its previous game. In my opinion, the situation, the numbers and the trends do all indeed point to the OVER as the sharp move in this game.
