We don't subscribe to any single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account numerous different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. One set of criteria which we always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics.
This particular play is based on a few different factors:
As note that Colorado has seen the total go UNDER the number in ten of 12 non-conference games this year and in 12 of 21 against teams with winning records, while UFC has seen the total go UNDER in six of 11 at home and in five of eight non-conference contests.
The bottom line: CU earned a No. 5 seed in the NIT and now must travel across country to face UCF on its home floor. UCF features 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall, who averages 11.1 points, 9.6 boards and 2.5 blocks per contest. CU coach Tad Boyle about his team's motivation: "I think the guys are excited to still have an opportunity to play," Boyle assessed on Sunday. "The NCAA is certainly the more prestigious tournament and the one everybody wants to be in, ourselves included. But the NIT is a great opportunity. We're going to play some good teams if we have the opportunity to advance. We're going to see a good one in Central Florida, the best defensive field goal percentage team in the country." Note that it was already determined that the Buffs would have rejected the CBI if the NIT invite hadn't arrived, which we think shows just how motivated Colorado is right now (which is not very). Also note that some rule changes that could effect the overall "flow" of the NIT tournament this year include experimental rules designed to test a potential move from halves to four-quarter games. Each half in the NIT will be broken down into 10-minute segments and each team will be allowed four fouls per 10-minute segment. Many different situational and trend based factors all point to the UNDER as the savvy move in this contest.
