The Padres are just a game back of the Dodgers in the NL West, and they host the Astros in Game 1 of a three game set at Petco tonight. So far the money spent in the off-season has proved to be well worth it for the Friars, and my money is on the home team here in San Diego tonight.
Here are my keys to the game:
1. Pitching - The Padres will send James Shields to the mound, and he's off to a good start with his new team. Shields (2-0, 3.24 ERA) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings in a no decision at Colorado in his most recent appearance. He only faced Houston once last season, going eight innings allowing one run on four hits in a win for the Royals. The Astros will counter with Collin McHugh, who's also pitched well so far.
2. Padres Improved Offense - San Diego owned the major league's worst offense last season, but it currently leads the National League with 96 runs scored.
3. X-Factor - The Padres are 22-5 in their last 27 games as a home favorite.
Selection: This is a play on the San Diego Padres(8*)
