The Metropolitan Division rivals the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals are no strangers to facing off against each-other in the playoffs. This will be the fourth post-season series they'll do battle over the last five years, and I like the Western Conference top seeded Rangers to come out ahead in the opener at MSG Thursday.
Here are my keys to the game:
1. Goaltending - The Rangers Henrik Lundqvist missed two months with a vascular injury before returning late in the season but has been immense so far in the playoffs. He allowed eight goals against the Pens in round 1, holding Pittsburgh to just one goal in four of the five games. He won both meetings with Washington during the regular season surrendering just two goals in each game. The Caps Braden Holtby has been solid in his six playoff starts but did not fare well against the Rangers during the regular season as he was 1-3 with a 3.06 GAA and just a .897 SV%.
2. Situational - The Caps had to battle the Islanders over seven games with two of the games going to overtime. The Rangers dismissed the Penguins over just five games in their conference quarterfinals and have had an extra three days to prepare. Note that the Rangers played their last game on April 24 and are 6-1 in their last seven playing on 3 or more days rest.
3. X-Factor - The Rangers have won eight of the last 11 meetings at MSG
Selection: This is a play on the New York Rangers (8*)
