The Giants lost in San Diego last night, and their chances of qualifying for the post-season are slim to none. I still think they will go down fighting though, and they are in a pretty good spot heading into the rubber match of this series versus the Padres. Tonight's starting pitchers faced off last week, and the result was an 8-0 Giants victory. I expect the same result despite the change of venue tonight.
Here are my keys to the game:
1. Pitching - The Giants hand the ball to Madison Bumgarner, who has won five straight. Bumbargner (18-8, 2.84 ERA) allowed a pair of runs on five hits over eight innings in a 2-0 loss to Arizona his last time out. He's 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA in four starts versus San Diego this season, and if he wins tonight he still has a good shot to become a 20 game winner in 2015. The Padres counter with Ian Kennedy, who is 0-3 with a 6.45 ERA in his last four starts.
2. Batter vs. Pitcher - Buster Posey is batting .349 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in September, and he's batting .386 with a home run and eight RBIs lifetime versus Kennedy.
3. X-Factor - The Padres are 4-8 in their last 12 home games.
Selection: This is a play on the San Francisco Giants (7*)
