This is a 10* ACC TOTAL OF THE YEAR on the OVER between Pittsburgh and North Carolina.

We don't subscribe to any one single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Motivation high for both teams: Pittsburgh is coming off a 65-63 loss at No. 12 Miami last time out, losing the game at the buzzer. It was the first time that the Panthers have lost a game when out-rebounding an opponent. So far Pittsburgh is 0-4 on the year vs. ranked opponents (note though that Pitt has won at least one game over a ranked opponent every year under the guidance of Jamie Dixon). Note that the Panthers rank 10th nationally in KenPom.com raw offensive efficiency at 116.1 points per 100 possessions. UNC ranks eighth on that list at 116.3. The Tar Heels are coming off a stretch of three straight road games and four in their last five overall, there's no doubt they'll be excited to play in front of the home town crowd today and to shake off a shaky performance vs. Boston College last time out; note though that the Tar Heels shot 59.1 percent in the second half at BC, their best shooting performance in a half in a month. We're definitely expecting the home side to carry over that efficiency into this one.

ATS statistics: Note that the total has gone OVER the number in seven of UNC's last nine in front of the home town crowd and in three of four the season after falling to cover the spread in three or more consecutive games. And note that Pittsburgh has seen the total eclipse the posted number in three of four this year off a loss vs. a conference rival.

The bottom line: It's an important game for each team and we feel that the conditions are right for a shootout, so with each team pushing the pace from the outset, all signs do indeed point to the OVER as the savvy move in this contest.
