This is a 10* Central Division TOTAL OF THE YEAR on the UNDER between the Dallas Stars and the Nashville Predators.

We don't subscribe to any one single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Classic letdown spot: After reaching the four-goal mark for a third consecutive game in Saturday's 4-3 win over Washington, there's no question we're expecting a bit of a letdown here finally and especially with star Tyler Seguin expected to sit this one out after his arm was cut in the win over the Capitals. Note, if Seguin does play, we definitely don't expect him to be 100% effective (also note, the Stars are already without the services of Jason Spezza, who is one of the team's top goal scorers). The Stars also beat the Blackhawks 4-2 on Thursday: "Obviously, those are two pretty good teams that we beat, so we're a confident group in here," Dallas captain Jamie Benn confirmed. Confident for sure. But also content.

Revenge: Enough is enough as far as the Predators are concerned, they've lost three straight in this series, getting outscored 13-5 in the process.

Above average goaltending: Nashville will likely go with Carter Hutton between the pipes, he's stopped 77 of 78 shots in winning his only three starts over the last month, including a 5-0 shutout victory over Florida on Saturday in which he made 22 saves. Hutton is 2-2-0 with a 2.26 GAA in four lifetime matches with Dallas. If coach Peter Laviolette does decide to go with struggling No. 1 Pekka Rinne, we still love this selection, who will be looking to bounce back after a frustrating stretch.

ATS statistics: Note that Dallas has seen the total go UNDER the number in seven of ten this year after a three-game unbeaten streak (which of course just strengthens our first point, the Stars absolutely have a tendency to come out flat and complacent after a stretch of excellence), while Nashville has seen the total dip below the posted number in six of nine this year after a victory by two goals or more and in seven of 11 after scoring four goals or more in its previous contest.

The bottom line: We think that the writing is on the wall and a lower-scoring battle is in the cards, all signs do indeed point to the UNDER as the sharp move in this contest.
