This is a 10* Atlantic-10 TOTAL OF THE MONTH on the UNDER between Dayton and St. Joseph's.

We don't subscribe to any one single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Super powers collide: A couple of the Atlantic 10's best go head-to-head on Wednesday night and we ultimately expect this fierce competition to result in a classic lower-scoring, scrappy battle. Dayton is is 21-3, while St. Joe's is 21-4. The Flyers have won nine straight and are 11-1 in league action. The Hawks are 10-2 in conference play and come into this one having won three straight.

Suffocating defensive play: Dayton allows the fewest points in the conference and 20th fewest in the country at just 64 per game: "They're very good defensively," Hawks' head coach Phil Martelli said of Dayton recently. "That's my biggest concern–whether or not we can score enough." Not to be outdone though, the Hawks possess the top field-goal percentage defense and there-point percentage defense in the A-10.

ATS statistics: Note that Dayton has seen the total go UNDER the number in three of its last four road games when the total in the contest is set between 140 to 144.5, while St. Joseph's has seen the total dip below the posted number in six of eight this season after scoring 80 points or more and in seven of 13 vs. teams with winning records.

The bottom line: With first place in the conference on the line, all signs point to a "chess match," rather than a run and gun shootout. Play on the UNDER.
