This is an 8* TOTAL EXPRESS on the UNDER between the Montreal Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche.

We don't subscribe to any one single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Motivated visiting side: After twice matching a season high for goals allowed in the first two of their three game road trip, there's no question that the Habs will be looking to clamp down defensively this evening: "We have to look at ourselves," Canadiens forward Lars Eller said last night. "It's not the game plan or anything else. It doesn't matter who you play -- every team is too good now. If you're even lacking five or 10 percent, you're going to look bad." Montreal will also be out to avenge a 6-1 setback to the Avs at home on November 14th.

Motivated home side: Colorado will be equally motivated to try to snap its third four-game home slide of the season before heading back to the road for two in a row.

ATS statistics: Note that Montreal has seen the total go UNDER the number in 23 of its last 41 in trying to revenge a home loss vs. an opponent, while Colorado has seen the total dip below the posted number in 11 of 15 this year after a loss by two goals or more in its previous contest.

The bottom line: Both teams are looking to snap out of their respective "funks," and we ultimately believe that their collective focus will result in a lower-scoring UNDER.
