This is a 10* TOTAL OF THE WEEK on the UNDER between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Charlotte Hornets.

We don't subscribe to any single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based what we feel to be a couple of key factors:

Improved defensive play: Charlotte is gunning for a fourth straight victory and it's 14-5 since January 22nd. Improved play on the defensive end has for the most part been responsible for the turnaround.

Over/Under ATS statistics: Both teams have been playing to some pretty high-scoring affairs of late, but this is a perfect spot to go the other way as each has shown a penchant to playing to the lower number in this position all season long; Minnesota has seen the total dip below the posted number in 19 of 34 this year after allowing 105 points or more and interestingly in six of eight vs. the Southeast division, while Charlotte has seen the total stay below the number in five of six this season after playing to three or more consecutive OVERs and in seven of eight vs. the Northwest division.

The bottom line: Will the Hornets have a letdown in this spot? They've certainly been playing extremely well and with a home heavy stretch upcoming, it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility that the home side comes out a bit flat/contented this evening. When taking into account all of the above factors, all signs do indeed point to the UNDER as the savvy move in this contest.
