We don't subscribe to any single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Bounce back mode: Toronto will be eager to return to form today after its 12-game home win streak ended in Sunday's 113-107 loss to the Rockets: "It's the kind of thing that has been occurring too much for us," Toronto point guard Kyle Lowry said afterwards. "We have to get better defensively. We are giving up 100 points like it's nothing."

Don't read too much into the numbers: It's true that Brooklyn just lost 132-118 to Minnesota on Saturday, but note that it was the second game of a back-to-back and defensive stars Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young were both given the night off.

Over/Under ATS statistics: Note that Brooklyn has seen the total go UNDER the number in in all there games this year as an underdog of 12.5 points or more and in 21 of 35 when playing against a team with a winning record, while Toronto has seen the total dip below the posted number in four of six this year after playing to three or more consecutive OVERs.

The bottom line: With Young and Lopez back in the line-up for the Nets and with Toronto looking to re-establish its form on the defensive end after a recent run of shoddy play, all signs do indeed point to the UNDER as the savvy move in this contest.
