There was good and bad news for the Mets on Tuesday. The good news was Jacob deGrom looked great in his first start in 13 months. The bad news is the Mets lost, 5-1, to the Nationals.

The 36-69 Nationals have the worst record in baseball. The Mets own the second-best mark in the National League. I see this as a kill spot for the Mets in a pitching matchup of Chris Bassitt versus Anibal Sanchez. So I'll go ahead and cut some of the heavy juice by laying 1 1/2 runs on the run line with New York.

Bassitt is a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter with a 3.83 ERA. He's 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA in day games. Bassitt gets to face a new Nationals lineup that no longer has its two best weapons with Juan Soto and Josh Bell both traded to the Padres. The Nationals' lineup was bad before. Now it has a real JV look to it.

The 38-year-old Sanchez probably reached the end of the line last season when he posted a 6.62 ERA. But the Nationals brought him back and put him in their rotation this season. The results haven't been good - an 0-3 record and 7.47 ERA. That ERA rises to 8.44 when he pitches at home.

Until getting upended by the Nationals last night, the Mets had won seven in a row. All of those victories were by more than one run except one. Look for them to get back on the winning side here facing the worst team in the league and a washed-up starter.
