The San Diego Padres were a sorry sight for a better part of last year, but they've been quite busy in the off-season and have acquired Matt Kemp from the Los Angeles Dodgers among others. Kemp will make his debut for the Padres tonight, but he'll be in for a stern challenge as the Dodgers are sending their ace to the hill to open the season.
Clayton Kershaw will toe the slab for the hosts coming off a dominant 2014 season as he deservedly was rewarded with the Cy Young Trophy. Kershaw (21-3, 1.77 ERA) won each of his three starts against the Padres last season compiling a 1.08 ERA over 25 innings and is an undefeated 3-0 while surrendering only one earned run on 25 hits over 25 2/3 innings over five opening day outings over his career.
The Padres will hand the ball to James Shields who has joined the club from the Royals during the off-season. Shields (14-8, 3.21 ERA) hurled seven innings in his first start ever against the Dodgers last season as he gave up four runs on seven hits with a homer.
San Diego scored a lousy 535 runs last season and six of their eight probable starting hitters that have faced Kershaw are a combined 7-for-66 against the 27 year old.
