The Nats will host the Mets on Opening Day, and Max Sherzer will debut as the apparent ace of the staff after signing a 210 milion dollar contract in the off-season. The Mets will had the ball to 41 year old Bartolo Colon, who was lit up pretty good this spring.
Colon made five appearances this spring, going 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA. He surrendered as many runs as his had strikeouts (13). His numbers versus the Nats last season aren't exactly encouraging either, going 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA.
Sherzer was as sharp as you could ask him to be during spring training. going 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA. Few pitchers strike out as many hitters as Mad Max, and he had 23 Ks in just 20 innings of work during Grapefruit League play.
The Mets didn't have a lot of success against Washington last year, and they've lost eight of the last 10 in this series. This looks like another tough spot for the visitors, and I expect the home side to get their money's worth from their ace today.
Take WAS.
