It was Washington that came into this season favored to win it all, but so far the Red Sox have been the far hotter team. These teams play the final game of a three game set at Fenway this afternoon, and Boston is looking to break out the brooms.
Wade Miley will toe the slab for the Sox, and he was solid in his debut. Miley (0-0, 3.38 ERA) didn't factor in the decision in a 6-5 win at New York, allowing a pair of runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. The southpaw has a history of bringing his best stuff in day games, going 9-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 21 starts in day games over the last three seasons.
The Nats will hand the ball to Gio Gonzalez, who's day/night splits aren't so flattering. Since 2012 Gonzalez is 11-12 with a 4.15 ERA in 33 starts in afternoon games. That's a start contrast to the rest of his numbers, and a pretty high ERA for a National League pitcher that pitches in a pitcher's park.
The Red Sox roughed up Stephen Strasburg yesterday, and I think Gonzalez will be in for a long day as well.
