The Giants are just a half game back of the Mets in the National League Wild Card race, and every game from here on out will be considered a "must win". Facing the Rockies at home, I have to like their chances tonight.
Jeff Samardzija will toe the slab for San Francisco, and he's been dealing. Samardzija (12-10, 3.83 ERA) tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out nine in a win at San Diego his last time out. He's 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA in three starts against the Rockies this season, and Colorado's lineup has more strikeouts (38) than hits (35) over 138 at bats versus Samardzija.
The Rockies hand the ball to Tyler Chatwood, who has excellent numbers on the road. Colorado has lost two of his last three starts on the road though, and his inability to go deep into the game could hurt Colorado tonight. He's 3-4 with a 5.47 ERA in his last 10 starts, walking 32 batters in those games.
Colorado's bullpen ranks dead last in the major leagues with a combined 5.05 ERA.
