Some preseason history here, as the Chiefs rolled up a 66-24 verdict on the George Halas Bears in preseason 1967, the first summer of interleague games between the NFL and old AFL. The AFL won only 3 of the 16 games that summer (many of them close; Denver surprisingly good for two of the wins) before coming out ahead in the following 1968, but there might have been no more shocking result in that colorful and intense era of preseason football than KC's romp past Chicago at old Municipal Stadium. It's been a good preseason thus far for the Bears, but that's been the pattern for HC Matt Eberflus, now 7-2 vs. the line and 8-1 vs. the spread in August action since 2022. While rookie star qb Caleb Williams isn't expected to play on Thursday night, Eberflus has been getting solid work from backup QBs Tyson Bagent (14 for 19 passing this summer, with 2 TDP and 0 picks) and Brett Rypien, each with NFL experience, throughout August. As for the Chiefs, they reportedly gear things down tonight, with starters not expected to play (no Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, etc.) and unconvincing backup QB play likely to drop KC to 0-3 in the preseason.
