BC Lions vs Calgary Stampeders Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 17 2026

Redblacks vs Stampeders picks

You’d think a football team scoring more than 35 points a game would have its playoff spot wrapped up by now. Apparently, Calgary’s defense never got that message. The Stampeders have spent much of the season putting points on the board, only to watch opponents do the same thing right back. Now they’ve got the BC Lions coming to McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Saturday, October 17, 2026, and another loss could finish their playoff hopes. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET, with TSN handling the Canadian television coverage and CFL+ streaming the game in the United States. At the time of writing, verified sportsbook odds weren’t available. Calgary is expecting a sunny Saturday with an afternoon high around 72°F, although temperatures should fall toward the evening and the precise kickoff wind, gusts and precipitation forecast still needs confirmation. BC has already secured its place in the postseason, but the Lions haven’t exactly been playing like a team interested in taking the rest of October off. BC Lions Are Winning Even When They Make Things Difficult

Somebody ought to remind the Lions that beating a winless football team doesn’t have to become an adventure. BC jumped ahead of Ottawa 14-0 on Friday, looked ready to make an easy night of it, and then spent much of the next two quarters giving the REDBLACKS opportunities to get back into the game. Ottawa actually pulled within three points before the Lions finally put things away, 41-20. The victory improved BC to 10-6 overall, including 4-4 on the road, and gave the club its fourth straight win. The Lions have also beaten Saskatchewan and Winnipeg during this run, so they’re not simply collecting victories against struggling teams. They’ve earned a playoff berth for the fifth consecutive season. Still, three giveaways against an Ottawa club that hasn’t won all year aren’t something I’d just shrug off. A better opponent could have made BC pay dearly for those mistakes.

Calgary’s defensive coaches probably didn’t enjoy seeing Nathan Rourke throw for another 360 yards Friday. The Lions have been producing more yardage than anybody in the CFL, averaging over 430 yards per game, and their offense can attack a defense in several different ways. BC is scoring 30.8 points a contest, but I actually find its defensive production more impressive. Opponents are managing only 60.8 rushing yards a game, which makes establishing any sort of ground attack a miserable assignment. The Lions also allow just over 26 points per game, a considerable improvement over what Calgary has been giving up. That’s not to say BC has everything figured out. The passing defense has allowed opponents to move the football, and the offensive turnovers against Ottawa were ugly. But there’s a difference between making mistakes and having a team that can’t recover from them. BC’s defense forced turnovers of its own Friday, and that helped prevent a sloppy performance from becoming an embarrassing loss.

Rourke has been giving defensive coordinators plenty to worry about lately. He completed 25 of 31 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns against Ottawa, which is a pretty good return even with an interception mixed in. Keon Hatcher has become one of his favorite targets, entering the game with 1,084 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Hatcher scored again Friday, although his lost fumble also gave Ottawa a chance to make things interesting. Zander Horvath was just as troublesome around the goal line. He rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 20 rushing scores for the season. That’s the kind of production that forces a defense to worry about more than Rourke’s arm. Stanley Berryhill III added 105 receiving yards, while Mathieu Betts helped create pressure that led to a takeaway. BC wasn’t completely healthy against Ottawa, with defensive linemen Levi Bell and David Gusta unavailable because of head injuries and offensive lineman Chris Schleuger dealing with a knee problem. The Week 20 injury report hadn’t established their availability for Saturday as of Monday. Calgary’s offense is dangerous enough that BC would certainly prefer having its defensive front at full strength.

Calgary Stampeders Keep Asking Too Much Of Their Offense

Vernon Adams Jr. must be getting tired of doing enough to win football games and then watching them slip away. Calgary had a chance to secure its playoff future in Winnipeg on Saturday, but the Stampeders spent too much of the afternoon digging themselves out of a hole. They trailed 24-9, fought back to within two points, and eventually lost 33-28. Calgary is now 8-9 overall, with a disappointing 3-5 mark at McMahon Stadium. Before that defeat, the Stamps had won three straight against Ottawa twice and Saskatchewan once. That’s respectable, although beating a winless Ottawa team twice isn’t exactly proof that everything has been fixed. Calgary controlled possession for more than 36 minutes in Winnipeg and still couldn’t get the result. There comes a point where a team has to quit talking about missed opportunities and start finishing games. Saturday might be its last chance to do that.

The Stampeders have scored 600 points through 17 games. That’s an average of 35.3 every week, and it ought to be enough to put a team in a much more comfortable position than Calgary currently occupies. Unfortunately, the defense has allowed 574. The Stamps are giving up nearly 34 points and 418 yards per game, leaving Adams with precious little room for an ordinary afternoon. Opposing quarterbacks have thrown for roughly 329 yards a contest against Calgary. Rourke and his receivers aren’t likely to overlook that invitation. The Stampeders have been pretty effective running the football, averaging 112.2 yards, although that won’t be easy against BC’s outstanding run defense. Calgary might have to throw considerably more than it would prefer, and that’s asking a lot from an offense that has already spent most of the year trying to outscore its own defensive mistakes. You can win an occasional shootout that way. Building an entire season around it is another matter.

Adams has thrown 34 touchdown passes this year, and some of his recent performances have been terrific. He threw four touchdowns against Saskatchewan and had 422 passing yards with three scores against Ottawa the week before. Winnipeg made him work harder. Adams completed 29 of 43 passes for 284 yards and one touchdown, and Calgary still couldn’t produce enough points to finish its comeback. Deonta McMahon helped keep the Stamps competitive with 77 rushing yards and two touchdowns, one on the ground and another through the air. Jalen Philpot has been another important piece, collecting 1,114 receiving yards and eight touchdowns entering the Winnipeg game. Calgary could use all those weapons Saturday, particularly with its receiving corps dealing with injuries. Reggie Begelton missed the Winnipeg game because of a knee problem, Ajou Ajou was unavailable with a neck injury, and offensive lineman Bradley Ashmore was sidelined by a foot issue. None had a confirmed Week 20 designation as of Monday. Those absences matter when the opposing defense has enough talent to pressure Adams without committing everybody to the pass rush.

BC Lions vs Calgary Stampeders Picks and Predictions

Moneyline Pick: BC Lions (-160 or Better, Conditional)

Calgary is capable of scoring 35 points Saturday and still losing. That’s the problem with trusting the Stampeders. Adams has been terrific for stretches, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes BC work considerably harder than Ottawa did. But Calgary’s defense has spent the season giving quarterbacks too much time, too much space and too many opportunities to throw the football. Rourke has been producing big passing numbers without needing everything to go perfectly, and the Lions have a running game that can finish possessions when they get near the end zone. BC also has the better defense, which should count for something in a matchup featuring two productive offenses. The three turnovers against Ottawa concern me. Give Calgary that kind of help, and Adams could absolutely make the Lions regret it. Still, I’d rather back a team capable of winning with both its offense and defense than one that seems to need a shootout every weekend. BC at -160 or better is my conditional moneyline selection, not a confirmed sportsbook price.

Total Pick: Over 55.5 Points (Conditional Target)

I’m not asking Calgary’s offense to do anything particularly unusual here. The Stampeders have been scoring more than 35 points per game, and they’re probably going to need another productive afternoon just to stay competitive with BC. Their defense has allowed 33.8 points a game, which isn’t a comforting number with Rourke coming to town. BC can throw the football, run it effectively and finish drives near the goal line. Calgary’s secondary has had trouble with much less dangerous passing attacks. The Lions do have a defense capable of slowing Adams, especially on the ground, and that’s the part that gives me some hesitation. If Calgary becomes too dependent on throwing the football and BC starts bringing pressure, the Stampeders could have trouble keeping up. But I’m not expecting either quarterback to spend Saturday handing the football off three times and punting. These offenses have too much ability, and Calgary’s defense has shown very little reason to expect a sudden turnaround. I’d take Over 55.5 if that total becomes available. The posted number matters, but at that target I like the chances of another busy night for the scoreboard operator.

Final Picks: BC Lions Moneyline (-160 or better, conditional) and Over 55.5 Points (conditional).
