Northern Illinois vs Arizona: Key Matchups and Game Preview
We're not sure anyone is too happy about Northern Illinois and its decision to move its football operation to the Mountain West this season. Likely not the MAC, from where the Huskies departed and whose members look like they are going to miss out on a chance to beat up maybe the worst NIU team in a generation. Probably not the Mountain West or commissioner Gloria Nevarez, either, thinking they were getting a representative gridiron entry to replace the many departed schools to the new Pac-12.
So, what has happened to the Huskies, just two years removed from that raucous upset win at Notre Dame? In February, head coach Thomas Hammock left DeKalb to take a job on the staff of the Super Bowl champion Seahawks. Given the timing, NIU had little alternative other than promoting from within, as defensive coordinator Rob Harley was elevated on an interim basis through the rest of the season. Yet the Huskies had already begun a decline under Hammock, dipping to 3-9 last season with one of the nation's worst offenses.

Northern Illinois' Offensive Struggles
Portal defections had already depleted the roster before Hammock left town, making this look like a thankless task for Harley. After the passing game flatlined and recorded just eight touchdown passes last season, Harley is hoping that Western Carolina transfer Taron Dickens, who tossed 38 touchdowns for the Catamounts a year ago, can jump-start the attack. But after two games, all the Huskies have to show for Dickens is one touchdown pass, a lopsided shutout loss at Iowa and a 28-24 home setback to FCS Illinois State, which actually entered last weekend as a slight favorite.
Arizona Looking to Respond
None of this bodes well if host Arizona is of the mind to take out some frustrations after a bitter loss at BYU last week in which the Wildcats had more than a bone or two to pick with the officiating in Provo. If Arizona is angry enough, QB Noah Fifita, who has 77 career touchdown passes, has enough weapons at his disposal to extend the margin over the horizon.
NIU vs ARIZ Betting Trends
Northern Illinois Trends
- Dipped to 3-9 last season with one of the nation's worst offenses
- Recorded just eight touchdown passes last season
- Taron Dickens has thrown just one touchdown pass through two games
- 5-15 against the spread over the last 20 games dating back to early 2024
Wildcats Trends
- Lost at BYU last week amid disputes over officiating
- Noah Fifita has 77 career touchdown passes
- Looking to respond after a frustrating result in Provo
- Line has moved from -31.5 up to -34.5 throughout the week
NIU and ARIZ Key Injuries and Things To Know
- No injuries listed for either team
Northern Illinois vs Arizona Side and Over/Under Picks
We're also hardly sure NIU has enough offense to slip in the back door if the Wildcats leave it open late in Tucson. Dating back to early in the 2024 campaign, Northern Illinois is 5-15 against the spread over its last 20 games, and if Arizona is angry enough after last week's result at BYU, Fifita and the Wildcats' weapons have enough firepower to extend the margin.
- Spread Pick: Arizona -34.5
- Total Pick: Under 49.5
Arizona vs Northern Illinois Final Score Prediction
- Arizona: 42
- Northern Illinois: 3
Fifita and Arizona's offense should have little trouble pulling away against a Northern Illinois defense that has already shown vulnerability this season, while the Huskies' offense under Dickens has yet to show enough to keep pace with a motivated Wildcats team.
