The Big West schedule rolls on as Cal State Northridge (4–4, 1–0) travels to the Bren Events Center to face UC Irvine (6–4, 1–0). Tip-off is set for 10:00 PM ET on ESPN+. Northridge is coming off an impressive win, but UC Irvine has been dominant at home and enters riding a three-game win streak. Cal State Northridge Matadors Preview

CSUN enters at 4–4, and although the record is modest, their performance in the conference opener was anything but. The Matadors blew out CSU Bakersfield 87–66 thanks to elite scoring from L. Hughes II (17.6 PPG), who continues to be one of the Big West’s toughest shot-makers.

CSUN averages 76.5 points per game, shoots efficiently in transition, and thrives on attacking the rim. Their rebounding numbers — 42.4 per contest — keep them competitive against most opponents, and their ball movement has improved each week.

The concern remains defense. Northridge allows 78.8 PPG, which is a dangerous weakness heading into a matchup with one of the conference’s most fundamentally sound offenses. If they can’t limit second-chance opportunities, Irvine will slowly wear them down.

UC Irvine Anteaters Preview

UC Irvine sits at 6–4 and looks like a team that’s finding its rhythm. The Anteaters have won three straight, including victories over San Jose State, UC Riverside, and a controlling win over San Diego State.

Offensively, they are driven by J. Dixon (15.9 PPG), who scores with efficiency and confidence. Irvine averages 79.0 PPG while shooting a balanced mix of paint touches, mid-range creation, and perimeter spacing.

What separates Irvine from most Big West opponents is their defense. The Anteaters allow just 63.2 points per game, making them one of the toughest defensive teams in the conference. They also rebound exceptionally well — 47 boards per game — and their ability to dominate possessions gives them a built-in advantage almost every night.

At home, Irvine has been even better, using their physicality and halfcourt execution to control tempo.

I’m backing UC Irvine here, and I feel strongly about it. Northridge has shown improvement, but Irvine’s defensive discipline and interior strength make this a difficult matchup for them.

CSUN relies heavily on scoring runs and transition bursts, but Irvine simply doesn’t let opponents dictate pace. Their rebounding edge, defensive rotations, and efficient scoring should gradually tilt the game in their favor. Unless Northridge shoots the lights out, they’ll struggle to keep up possession-for-possession.

I expect Irvine to pull away in the second half, using their depth and physicality to create separation.
