A late-night West Coast matchup closes Wednesday’s slate as Fresno State travels to Northridge to take on CSUN in a game that both teams badly need to steady early-season inconsistency. Before placing any wagers on this tightly projected contest, make sure you check the updated insights on the Free College Basketball Picks page for expert opinions and deeper analytics.
Fresno State Preview
Fresno State enters at 6–4, though their recent form has been shaky with back-to-back losses — an 82–58 defeat to Arkansas followed by a 76–71 loss to CSU Bakersfield. The Bulldogs have struggled defensively in those games, giving up high-percentage looks inside and losing the rebounding battle, which is normally one of their strengths.
Offensively, the Bulldogs rely heavily on Jalen Heidbreder, who is averaging 18.8 points per game while shooting efficiently at 48.1% from the floor and nearly 85% from the foul line. Heidbreder provides steady scoring from the wing, but Fresno State needs more consistent secondary production to keep pace with CSUN, a team that plays with much more pace and shot volume.
Fresno State averages 75.4 points per game and pulls down 46 rebounds per game, both solid marks, but their lack of rim protection (just 2.1 blocks per game) has led to opponents getting too many clean looks. Their ability to limit turnovers and control tempo will be critical in preventing CSUN from speeding the game up.

Cal State Northridge Preview
CSUN sits at 4–5, but their record is deceiving. Four of their losses have come to disciplined, physical teams, and they’re coming off a strong showing despite an 85–71 loss at UC Irvine. At home, the Matadors have been much tougher, posting a 3–0 record thanks to better rebounding and balanced scoring.
Their offense revolves around Luis Hughes II, who averages 17.7 points per game while shooting over 43% from the field and nearly 78% at the line. Hughes’ athletic ability and driving game create matchup problems, especially against Fresno State’s slower perimeter defenders. The Matadors score 75.9 points per game and are one of the better offensive rebounding teams in the Big West, averaging 41.2 boards per game, giving them second-chance opportunities that can shift momentum quickly.
Defensively, the Matadors allow 79.4 points per game, which is a concern, but their aggression and physicality tend to increase at home. If CSUN wins the turnover battle and plays downhill early, they have a strong chance to dictate rhythm in this matchup.
Fresno State vs Cal State Northridge Pick
I’m taking CSUN at home in this spot. While Fresno State has the best pure scorer on the floor in Heidbreder, CSUN’s athleticism, rebounding edge, and energy in their home arena give them the matchup advantage. Fresno’s defense has slipped recently, especially on the interior, and that plays directly into CSUN’s offensive strengths.
