Utah Tech Trailblazers Preview

Head coach Jon Judkins begins his 21st season leading Utah Tech as the program plays its final year in the WAC before joining the Big Sky. The Trailblazers bring back a few key players, including forward Samuel “Tobi” Ariyibi, who averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds last year, and sophomore guard Madiba Owona, one of the WAC’s top freshmen. Senior forward Ethan Potter also returns after being named to the preseason All-WAC team.

Judkins has added several new players through the transfer portal and freshman class, looking to fix the scoring droughts and defensive lapses that hurt the team last season. Utah Tech will need steadier guard play and more inside toughness to stay competitive. This opener gives the Trailblazers a chance to build confidence before their difficult stretch of games at Arizona and Arizona State later in the week.

South Dakota Coyotes Preview

South Dakota starts its season with an experienced backcourt under third-year head coach Eric Peterson. Guards Isaac Bruns and Chase Forte combined to average more than 25 points per game last year and will again carry the scoring load. Kaleb Stewart adds another reliable perimeter option, while senior center Cameron Fens provides help around the rim. Transfer guard Josiah Dotzler brings depth and experience after stints at Creighton and St. Louis.

The Coyotes played at a fast pace last season and ranked among the nation’s highest-scoring teams. Defense was a problem, but Peterson expects better results with more size and experience in the rotation. South Dakota’s guards should have the edge early, especially against a Utah Tech team still working in new lineups.

Utah Tech at South Dakota Prediction

South Dakota’s guard play and home-court advantage should set the tone. The Coyotes can score in bunches, and Utah Tech’s defense may have trouble keeping up over 40 minutes. Final Score Prediction: South Dakota Coyotes win and cover ATS, 83–69.
