Wofford heads to Knoxville on Tuesday, November 3, to face Tennessee at Food City Center. Tipoff is set for 6:00 PM ET on SEC Network, and both teams are opening their regular seasons. Tennessee is the clear favorite, although a traditional point spread and game total weren’t available when this preview was prepared. Wofford Has a Tough Assignment Right Away
Wofford isn’t getting much time to settle into the new season. The Terriers open with Tennessee on Tuesday and then have to travel to North Carolina on Friday. That’s quite a way to start November, especially for a Southern Conference program trying to find out what it has.
Here’s the problem with playing Tennessee. You can’t just expect to walk into Knoxville, run your normal offense, and get comfortable. The Volunteers have built their reputation around making teams work for decent shots, and that can get frustrating in a hurry. Wofford needs to protect the basketball and avoid giving Tennessee easy points off turnovers.
I wouldn’t completely dismiss the Terriers, though. These early-season games can get a little sloppy, and the underdog doesn’t have to play a perfect game to make a big spread interesting. Wofford’s best chance is to stay patient, make Tennessee defend for an entire possession, and avoid getting buried before halftime.
Tennessee Wants a Better Showing
Tennessee opens the regular season at 0-0, but its exhibition results weren’t pretty. The Volunteers lost 86-70 against Xavier on October 15 and followed that with a 103-64 loss at Duke five days later. Now, those games don’t count in the standings, but giving up 189 points in two exhibitions isn’t exactly what you want to see.
The good news for Tennessee is that Wofford presents a much different challenge than Duke. The Volunteers should have the size and athleticism to make things uncomfortable around the basket. I also expect Tennessee to put more emphasis on defensive communication after those exhibition performances. You don’t want bad habits carrying into games that actually count.
Look, I’m not ready to panic about Tennessee because of two exhibitions. But I’m also not going to pretend those games never happened. The Volunteers need to show they can defend without fouling and get quality possessions on offense. This is a good opportunity to clean some things up before the schedule gets considerably tougher.
Wofford vs Tennessee Picks and Prediction
Moneyline Pick: Tennessee Volunteers
I’m taking Tennessee to win this one. The Volunteers have the home floor, the stronger conference pedigree, and a roster that should be better equipped to handle the physical side of this matchup. Wofford might give them some trouble early, especially if Tennessee is still sorting things out defensively, but I don’t see the Terriers keeping up for 40 minutes. The moneyline is my choice here rather than laying an unverified point spread. Tennessee should win, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s going to cover whatever number the sportsbooks eventually post.
Total Pick: Under — Pending Posted Line
The under is where I’m leaning, but the number matters quite a bit. Tennessee’s exhibition defense was concerning, so I’m not pretending this is some automatic low-scoring game. Still, I expect the Volunteers to make defense a priority after those losses, and Wofford could have a difficult time generating consistent offense against a bigger opponent. If Tennessee controls the boards and makes the Terriers work late into the shot clock, this game could settle into a slower rhythm. I’d rather take that angle than count on both teams shooting well in their first regular-season game. I’ll need the actual total before calling it a firm wager.
Final Picks: Tennessee Volunteers Moneyline | Under (conditional lean; line not yet available)
