Cal Poly Preview
Cal Poly leaned on quarterback Ty Dieffenbach in the opener, and he delivered with 263 yards and two scores through the air while also rushing for 69 yards and a touchdown. Wideout Michael Briscoe was his top target, catching seven passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs piled up 41 points and over 400 total yards, showing good rhythm early in Paul Wulff’s second season at the helm.
Defensively, Cal Poly forced two turnovers and held San Diego under 300 yards. Mikey D’Amato led the way with 16 tackles, and Kenny Olson chipped in two sacks. Still, this group struggled last season against more physical programs and now faces a major jump in competition against Utah’s size and athleticism up front.
Utah Preview
Utah wasted no time setting the tone at UCLA, exploding for 43 points in a game that was never in doubt. Quarterback Devon Dampier was nearly flawless, completing 21-of-25 for 206 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 87 yards and a score. The Utes showed balance and speed, racking up big plays both on the ground and through the air.
Defensively, Utah’s front controlled the line of scrimmage, limiting the Bruins to just 10 points. John Henry Daley had two sacks, and Lander Barton led the unit with seven tackles. The Utes allowed just one touchdown and swarmed on third down. With a significant edge in talent, depth, and physicality, Utah will aim to smother Cal Poly from the jump and avoid any injury risk heading into Pac-12 play.
Cal Poly vs Utah Pick
The Utes are on another level talent-wise and just blew out a better opponent in Week 1. Cal Poly looked sharp against San Diego, but this is a massive leap in speed and strength. Utah’s defense should overwhelm Dieffenbach, and Dampier is likely to carve up a thin Mustang secondary. Final Score Prediction: Utah 48, Cal Poly 10.
