Duke vs Virginia Picks and Predictions for Friday October 23 2026
Duke and Virginia again. Remember the ACC Championship Game last December? Duke won that one 27-20 in overtime, and I imagine the folks in Charlottesville haven’t forgotten it. Now the Blue Devils come to Scott Stadium on Friday, October 23, 2026, for a 7:00 PM ET kickoff on ESPN. Virginia opened as a 6.5-point favorite, but that number has been knocked down to around 2.5. The total has dropped from 53.5 to roughly 48.5. That’s a pretty serious adjustment, and Saturday’s results explain some of it. Virginia lost 23-13 at SMU, and its offense looked awfully thin with so many players unavailable. The early forecast calls for a cool, dry evening with temperatures in the 50s and light wind. Duke Has A Chance To Steal Another One
Duke is 4-2, including a 1-1 road record. The Blue Devils have had an extra week to get ready for this game, which isn’t a bad deal when the other team just spent Saturday getting knocked around by SMU. Duke has covered four of its six games, and that tells me the Blue Devils have been more competitive than some people expected. Going into Charlottesville is another matter. Virginia has owned this matchup at Scott Stadium lately, and Duke hasn’t won there since 2014. That’s a long time. But last year’s ACC title game should give the Blue Devils some confidence. They know they can beat this team.
Duke’s biggest opportunity is on defense. Virginia managed only 13 points against SMU and struggled badly throwing the football. If the Blue Devils can make the Cavaliers one-dimensional, they should have a chance to control the game. Duke doesn’t need to score 40 here. It needs to avoid giving away easy possessions and make Virginia drive the length of the field. The Blue Devils have been good enough defensively to stay competitive, although they haven’t always been consistent against the run. That’s where I’d expect Virginia to test them early.
The extra preparation time should help Duke’s offense, too. The Blue Devils have had a chance to study Virginia’s defensive front and figure out where they can get favorable matchups. But I’d be careful about expecting some offensive explosion. Virginia’s defense played reasonably well at SMU, even with all the injuries. Duke needs steady quarterback play, a useful running game, and a few third-down conversions. Nothing fancy. Just don’t spend the whole night putting the defense back on the field.

Virginia Has Some Problems To Sort Out
Virginia is 4-3 overall and 4-0 at home. That’s the good news. The Cavaliers haven’t lost in Charlottesville this season, and they’ve won their last six home meetings with Duke. The bad news? They just lost 23-13 at SMU and looked pretty rough offensively. Virginia was competitive early, but the offense disappeared in the second half. The Cavaliers are now 0-2 on the road, and they’ve got to be happy about getting back to Scott Stadium. Home field matters here. It just might not be enough to overcome the injuries.
Virginia was missing 22 players against SMU, including several important offensive pieces. That’s a lot of guys to have standing on the sideline. The Cavaliers ran the ball reasonably well early, picking up 82 rushing yards in the first half, but then got away from it. I didn’t understand that decision. When your passing game is struggling and your receivers are banged up, why stop running the football? Virginia’s defense kept SMU to 23 points, so that side of the ball wasn’t the main problem. The Cavaliers need to figure out how to score without asking their quarterback to do everything.
Drew Pribula threw for just 137 yards against SMU without a touchdown pass. That’s not going to scare Duke. Receivers Kameron Courtney and Rico Flores Jr. were among the unavailable players, and their status matters quite a bit. Virginia needs more healthy targets and better protection. The defense has been doing enough to keep games competitive, but somebody on offense has to finish drives. Field goals aren’t going to win every Friday night ACC game.
Duke vs Virginia Picks and Predictions
Duke +2.5 (-110)
I’m taking Duke and the points. Virginia has been excellent at home, and I don’t dismiss that. Scott Stadium can be a difficult place to play, especially at night. But the Cavaliers are coming off a rough offensive performance, and that injury list is hard to ignore. Duke has had extra time to prepare, and I think the Blue Devils can make Virginia work for every first down. If the Cavaliers get several receivers back, this becomes a different argument. Until then, I don’t see why Duke can’t win outright. I’ll take the 2.5 points and live with the road risk.
Under 48.5 Points (-110)
I’m going under 48.5, although the number was a lot more attractive when it was 53.5. Virginia just scored 13 against SMU, and its passing game is missing some important pieces. Duke should be able to make things difficult without taking many chances defensively. Virginia’s defense is capable of keeping the Blue Devils from running away with this one, too. The danger is a turnover or special-teams play handing somebody a cheap touchdown. But I think both teams spend plenty of time trying to establish the run. A 24-20 type of game feels about right.
Final Picks: Duke +2.5 (-110) and Under 48.5 Points (-110)
