The BYU Cougars continued their ascent as one of the top programs in the country and were the second team left out of the College Football Playoff. The 12th ranked Cougars (11-2) rank third in the Big 12 Conference in total defense and are limiting the opposition to 19 points per contest. In the conference championship game, BYU turned the ball over four times during a 34-7 loss against fourth ranked Texas Tech.

Junior RB L.J. Martin put BYU on the scoreboard first with a 10-yard touchdown run and finished with 76 rushing yards. Freshman QB Bear Bachmeier was picked off twice and threw for just 115 yards. Parker Kingston added four receptions for 44 yards in a losing effort for the Cougars.
