In Saturday afternoon college football action, the Houston Cougars will travel to Allen E. Paulson Stadium to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles. On Friday, Houston was unable to convert a two-point conversion attempt in the closing seconds of a 28-26 road loss against 13th ranked Texas Tech.

Senior QB Connor Weigman completed 27 of 38 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. Amare Thomas caught seven passes for a team-high 75 yards and a score. TE Patrick Overmyer added 72 receiving yards and a touchdown for the Cougars, who gained 458 yards of total offense.

Georgia Southern Preview

The Georgia Southern Eagles have made four straight bowl games for head coach Clay Helton and defeated App State in last year’s Birmingham Bowl. The Eagles (1-2) lead the Sun Belt Conference in total defense and are allowing 17.7 points per contest. Last week, Georgia Southern was unable to protect a 14-point halftime lead during a 31-27 road loss against Jacksonville State.

Sophomore QB Weston Bryant was effective in the red zone for Georgia Southern and scored three rushing touchdowns. Veteran QB Max Johnson took the majority of the snaps and finished with 187 passing yards. David Mbadinga added a game-high 103 rushing yards for the Eagles, who possessed the ball for 36 plus minutes.
