James Madison vs Appalachian State Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 22 2026
You ever see a football team score 35 points before halftime and wonder why the other guys even bothered coming out for the second half? That’s pretty much what James Madison did to Georgia State Saturday. The Dukes put up 35 in the first two quarters and cruised to a 49-22 win. Now they’re heading up to Boone to play Appalachian State on Thursday night. That place can get loud, and the Mountaineers aren’t exactly going to roll over because James Madison shows up undefeated. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM ET on ESPNU from Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina. James Madison is favored by 10.5 points, with the total sitting around 57.5. The Dukes are 7-0, App State is 4-2, and I think we’re going to find out pretty quickly whether the Mountaineers can keep up. James Madison Has Been Beating Everybody
Seven games, seven wins. And James Madison hasn’t been squeaking by, either. The Dukes just beat Georgia State 49-22, and that game was pretty much finished by halftime. They rolled up 515 yards, ran for 250, and scored on all six trips inside the red zone. Six for six! You can’t do much better than that. James Madison has already beaten Liberty, San Diego State, Old Dominion, Marshall, and Georgia Southern. They’ve been winning at home, winning on the road, and making it look pretty easy most weeks. The Dukes are 4-0 in Sun Belt play, and right now I don’t see many teams in the conference that can match them.
James Madison is scoring 42.9 points per game and allowing 16. That’s a pretty serious gap. The offense has been moving the ball however it wants. Against Georgia State, they threw for 265 yards and ran for 250. Try defending that. You load up against the run, and they’ll throw it. You sit back in coverage, and somebody runs through a hole big enough to drive a truck through. The defense has been doing its part, too. Georgia State managed 373 yards, but the Dukes kept the game under control. Appalachian State had trouble moving the ball against Old Dominion a couple of weeks ago, and James Madison’s defense isn’t going to make things any easier.
Camden Coleman threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia State, completing 13 of 19 passes. George Pettaway ran for 119 yards on just 14 carries. That’s eight and a half yards every time he touched the ball. Pretty good work if you can get it. The Dukes have been getting help from several different backs, too, so it’s not like you can shut down one guy and call it a night. The offensive line has been opening holes, the quarterback has been making good decisions, and the defense has been getting pressure without having to send everybody after the passer. It’s a good football team. Simple as that.

Appalachian State Better Be Ready To Play
Appalachian State is 4-2, and the Mountaineers have been a little hard to figure out. They started 3-0, then lost 41-31 to NC State and 10-3 to Old Dominion. Three points against Old Dominion. At home! That’s the kind of game that makes everybody in the stands start checking their phones before the fourth quarter. But App State bounced back Friday and beat Coastal Carolina 35-32. Good win. They needed it. Now they’re back in Boone, where the crowd will be ready for an undefeated James Madison team. If the Mountaineers can keep this close into the fourth quarter, that place is going to be rocking.
The Mountaineers are averaging 29.5 points and allowing 21.8. Not terrible, but those numbers don’t exactly scream conference championship. The offense has been inconsistent. Thirty-five against Coastal Carolina, three against Old Dominion. That’s quite a difference. The running game has been hit or miss, and the offensive line hasn’t always given the quarterback much time. That’s a problem against James Madison. The Dukes are allowing only 16 points a game, and they don’t give up many easy touchdowns. App State needs to run the ball, keep the chains moving, and stay out of third-and-long. If they’re punting every three plays, James Madison is going to have a field day.
Appalachian State has enough talent to make some plays, but the Mountaineers haven’t been getting consistent production from their offense. The quarterback can move the ball when he has time, and the receivers have shown they can get open. But the protection has been shaky against better defensive fronts. The running backs need to do more, too. Against Old Dominion, App State couldn’t establish anything on the ground, and the whole offense fell apart. The Coastal Carolina game was better, but James Madison is a different kind of opponent. The Mountaineers are going to need their best offensive performance of the season to have a chance Thursday.
James Madison vs Appalachian State Picks and Predictions
James Madison -10.5 (-110)
I’m laying the 10.5 with James Madison. And yeah, I know Boone can be a tough place to play. Appalachian State has a good crowd, and the Mountaineers just scored 35 against Coastal Carolina. They might make this interesting for a while. But I keep coming back to what James Madison has been doing. Forty-three points a game, 16 allowed, and they just ran for 250 yards while throwing for another 265. That’s a lot for any defense to handle. App State couldn’t score more than three against Old Dominion, and now it’s facing a team that’s been playing better football on both sides of the ball. I think the Dukes get ahead, wear down the Mountaineers, and win by a couple of touchdowns. I’ll take James Madison.
Under 57.5 Points (-110)
I’m going under 57.5. I know James Madison can score 40 without breaking much of a sweat, and that makes this a little uncomfortable. But App State has been all over the place offensively. Thirty-five one week, three the week before. Which team are we getting Thursday? I don’t know. What I do know is James Madison has been allowing only 16 points a game. The Dukes should be able to make the Mountaineers work for everything, and I don’t think App State is going to put up 30 here. The one thing that worries me is James Madison scoring too quickly. If the Dukes start ripping off long touchdowns, this total could get away from us. But I think they control the game and keep App State somewhere around 14 or 17 points. A 35-17 final sounds about right. Give me the under.
Final Picks: James Madison -10.5 (-110) and Under 57.5 Points (-110)
