Kent State vs Sacramento State Picks and Predictions for Friday October 30 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/26/2026, 07:38 PM ET

Kent State is favored by ten points on the road. Let that sink in for a second. We’re talking about a Golden Flashes team that has already lost five games and hasn’t been particularly good offensively. But Sacramento State is having an even rougher year, and the Hornets just lost 34-17 to Ball State. Somebody has to be favored, I suppose. Kent State has the better overall team, but laying double digits on the road with a team that’s struggled to score is not something I’m particularly excited about. Be prepared for all the college action with our free college football picks.

Kent State travels to Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California, on Friday, October 30, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 PM ET on ESPN2. Kent State is favored by approximately 9.5 to ten points, with the total at 46.5. An early forecast calls for temperatures around 61 degrees, winds near 5 mph, and little chance of rain. That’s good football weather, and conditions shouldn’t be a major factor.

Kent State Has Been Having a Rough Time Away From Home

Kent State is 3-5 overall, but the Golden Flashes haven’t won on the road this season. They’ve been outscored badly in several of those games, including a 57-0 loss at South Carolina, a 59-3 loss at Ohio State, and a 38-7 defeat at Western Michigan. That’s a pretty brutal collection of road results. Kent State has also struggled to score against better competition, and that’s why I’m reluctant to lay a big number. The Golden Flashes have had some success against weaker opponents, but Sacramento State will be desperate to make this competitive at home.

Kent State’s offense has been inconsistent, particularly through the air. The Golden Flashes have struggled to protect the quarterback and haven’t been able to generate enough explosive plays. They scored only two points at South Florida, which tells you how badly things can go when the offense gets stuck. The running game hasn’t been reliable enough to take pressure off the passing attack, and that’s a problem against a Sacramento State defense that has shown some ability to create turnovers. Kent State needs to establish the run and avoid getting into obvious passing situations. If the Golden Flashes can do that, they should be able to control the game.

Kent State’s defense has been better against weaker opponents, but it has been overwhelmed by stronger teams. The Golden Flashes have given up 57 to South Carolina, 59 to Ohio State, and 38 to Western Michigan. Sacramento State isn’t in that class, so this should be a much more manageable assignment. The Hornets just managed 266 total yards against Ball State, and Kent State should be able to keep them from moving the ball consistently. The biggest concern is turnovers. Sacramento State intercepted Ball State twice Saturday, and the Hornets have shown they can create mistakes. Kent State can’t afford to give away easy points.

Sacramento State Has Been Struggling to Finish Games

Sacramento State is 1-7 after losing 34-17 to Ball State on Saturday. The Hornets have had a difficult transition into their current schedule, and they’ve struggled to compete consistently. Sacramento State actually had some opportunities against Ball State, but it couldn’t turn them into enough points. The Hornets forced two interceptions and still lost by 17. That’s the kind of result that tells you how difficult things have been. Sacramento State needs to take advantage of every opportunity Friday, because Kent State isn’t going to hand it many chances.

The Hornets managed 266 total yards against Ball State, including 212 through the air. The running game produced only 54 yards, and that’s not enough to keep an offense balanced. Sacramento State has been relying heavily on its passing attack, but the protection hasn’t always been there. The Hornets also had trouble sustaining drives, and Ball State was able to control the game with its running attack. Kent State has struggled defensively against stronger opponents, but Sacramento State doesn’t have the offensive firepower to exploit every weakness. The Hornets need to establish some kind of running game if they want to keep this close.

Sacramento State’s defense has shown some ability to make plays. The Hornets intercepted Ball State twice, including one in the end zone, and they had several chances to get back into the game. But they couldn’t get enough stops when it mattered. Ball State finished with 417 yards, including 183 rushing. That’s a concern against a Kent State team that will probably try to control the game on the ground. Sacramento State needs to be more disciplined defensively, too. The Hornets committed seven penalties for 68 yards in the second half Saturday, including two on defensive third downs. Those mistakes kept Ball State drives alive, and they can’t afford to repeat them Friday.

Kent State vs Sacramento State Picks and Predictions

Sacramento State +10

I’ll take Sacramento State getting ten points. Kent State is the better team, and I expect the Golden Flashes to win. But laying double digits on the road with a team that’s struggled to score is asking a lot. Sacramento State has been competitive in stretches, and the Hornets showed against Ball State that they can create turnovers. Kent State’s offense hasn’t been reliable enough for me to trust it to pull away comfortably. The concern is Sacramento State’s inability to run the football. If the Hornets become one-dimensional, Kent State could control the game. But I think Sacramento State keeps this closer than the spread suggests, and I’ll take the points.

Under 46.5

I’m going under 46.5. Neither team has been particularly effective offensively, and Sacramento State just managed 266 yards against Ball State. Kent State has struggled to score on the road, and I don’t expect the Golden Flashes to suddenly put up 40 points. The Hornets should have trouble running the football, which could make it difficult to sustain drives. The danger is turnovers creating short fields, especially with Sacramento State’s defense showing some ability to intercept passes. But I think both teams spend plenty of time punting, and something around 27-17 makes sense. That’s enough for Kent State to win without covering, and it keeps the total under.

Final Picks: Sacramento State +10 and Under 46.5
