Middle Tennessee vs FIU Picks and Predictions for Tuesday October 20 2026
I’ll give Middle Tennessee credit for one thing. The Blue Raiders found a way to win last week. After getting embarrassed 55-0 by Kansas, they came home and beat Delaware 33-30. That’s a pretty good response. But now they’ve got to go on the road again, and that’s where things have been falling apart. Middle Tennessee visits FIU at Pitbull Stadium in Miami on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network. FIU is favored by 10.5 points at DraftKings, with the total at 45.5. That’s a fairly big spread for two teams sitting at .500, but the Panthers have been much better defensively. The forecast is calling for temperatures around 78 degrees with little rain expected and a breeze near 11 mph. Nothing there that should cause much trouble. Middle Tennessee Hasn’t Figured Out The Road Yet
Middle Tennessee is 3-3, and all three wins have come at home. On the road? Three losses. They lost 28-26 at Marshall, 23-13 at Jacksonville State, and then got absolutely buried at Kansas. That 55-0 game wasn’t even competitive. The Blue Raiders did bounce back against Delaware last Tuesday, winning 33-30, but I’m not ready to pretend everything is fixed. Delaware isn’t exactly a powerhouse, and Middle Tennessee needed nearly every one of those 33 points to survive. Still, a win is a win. Coach Derek Mason will take it, especially after what happened at Kansas.
The offense has been inconsistent. Middle Tennessee scored 38 against Murray State, 27 against Nevada, and 33 against Delaware. That’s fine. But it managed only 13 against Jacksonville State and nothing against Kansas. The Blue Raiders haven’t shown they can move the ball consistently against a good defense. Their defense has had problems of its own, allowing 31.5 points per game through the first five games. Kansas scored 55, and Delaware added 30. FIU isn’t a great offensive team, but the Panthers don’t need to be when their defense is playing this well. Middle Tennessee’s biggest problem Tuesday might be finding enough first downs to keep the game close.
Quarterback Roman Gagliano has shown he can make throws when the protection holds up. He’s been accurate enough to keep the offense moving, and Middle Tennessee has gotten some decent production from its receivers. But the Blue Raiders haven’t had much success establishing the run against stronger opponents. That’s going to make things difficult against FIU. The Panthers have been one of the better defensive teams in Conference USA, and they’re not going to give away much. Middle Tennessee also needs to avoid the turnovers and penalties that have hurt it in road games. If the Blue Raiders start handing FIU short fields, this could get ugly in a hurry.

FIU Has A Defense Worth Talking About
FIU is 3-3, and the Panthers have been one of the more interesting teams in Conference USA. They’ve beaten New Mexico State, Sam Houston, and another opponent, while losing to stronger competition. Their most recent game was a 27-24 loss at Jacksonville State on October 13. That’s not a bad result considering Jacksonville State had been playing well. FIU had chances to win that game, too. The Panthers have been much better at home, where they’re 3-0, and that’s a big reason I like their chances Tuesday. Middle Tennessee hasn’t won on the road, and FIU hasn’t lost at home. Sometimes the matchup really is that simple.
The Panthers’ defense has been the story. FIU was ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense entering last week’s game, and that wasn’t because they’d been playing nothing but terrible offenses. They were giving up very few points and making opponents work for every yard. The offense hasn’t been nearly as impressive. FIU moves the ball reasonably well between the 20s, but scoring touchdowns has been another matter. That’s why the Panthers have been playing so many close games. They can control the field position and keep opponents from scoring, but they don’t always finish drives themselves. Against Middle Tennessee, that might not matter. The Blue Raiders have been allowing plenty of points, and FIU should have opportunities to take advantage.
Quarterback JJ Kohl has been improving, although the Panthers still need more consistency from the passing game. He’s got the arm to make throws downfield, but FIU has to do a better job finishing drives. The running game has been useful, and the defense has been carrying the team through stretches when the offense stalls. That’s not a bad formula against Middle Tennessee. The Panthers don’t need to throw for 350 yards or score 40 points. They need to protect the football, make a few plays on offense, and let their defense do what it’s been doing. If they can get ahead early, I don’t see Middle Tennessee having an easy time coming back.
Middle Tennessee vs FIU Picks and Predictions
FIU -10.5 (-110)
I’m taking FIU, and I know 10.5 points is a lot to lay with a team that doesn’t always score touchdowns. That’s the part that bothers me. The Panthers can dominate a game defensively and still win by seven because they settle for field goals. But Middle Tennessee has been awful on the road, and I don’t trust that offense against FIU’s defense. The Blue Raiders scored nothing at Kansas and only 13 at Jacksonville State. Now they’re facing another team that can make life difficult up front. FIU is unbeaten at home, and I think the Panthers are going to get enough short fields and scoring chances to pull away. Something like 27-13 sounds about right. I’ll lay the points.
Under 45.5 Points (-110)
I’m taking the under, and this one comes down to FIU’s defense. The Panthers have been keeping opponents out of the end zone, and Middle Tennessee hasn’t shown much offensive life away from home. The Blue Raiders might struggle to score more than 14 or 17 points. FIU can certainly put up 28 against this defense, but I’m not convinced the Panthers are going to turn this into a track meet. Their offense has been too inconsistent in the red zone. The danger is Middle Tennessee giving away a couple of short fields or throwing a pick-six. That can ruin an under pretty quickly. But I think FIU will be content to control the game, run the football, and let its defense handle the rest. Give me the under 45.5.
Final Picks: FIU -10.5 (-110) and Under 45.5 Points (-110)
