Missouri State vs Western Kentucky Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 8 2026
The Missouri State Bears visit the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, for a Conference USA matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET with coverage on CBS Sports Network. Both teams have struggled to build consistency through the opening portion of the season, making this essentially a toss-up in the betting market. Western Kentucky is currently favored by 1.5 points, with the total sitting at 55.5. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more college football predictions throughout the season.
Missouri State Has Been More Competitive Than Its Record Suggests
Missouri State has already faced a difficult schedule, including a season-opening trip to Texas A&M and a late-September matchup at nationally ranked SMU. The Bears were shut out 50-0 in College Station, but their performance against SMU was considerably more encouraging. Missouri State built an early double-digit advantage before eventually falling 34-24.
That SMU performance matters because Missouri State demonstrated that it can generate offense against a quality opponent. The Bears didn’t simply hang around because of turnovers or unusual circumstances; they created enough offense to force SMU to rally from behind. That gives Missouri State a more encouraging offensive ceiling entering conference play.
The Bears also get a considerable drop in opponent quality Thursday. Western Kentucky has allowed at least 34 points in four of its five games, including 49 against Nevada, 70 against Georgia and 34 against New Mexico State. Missouri State doesn’t need to produce an elite offensive performance to move the ball consistently against a defense that has struggled throughout September.

Western Kentucky Returns Home Looking for Answers
Western Kentucky enters Thursday at 1-4, with its only victory coming in a 52-7 home win over Mercyhurst. The Hilltoppers have otherwise lost 49-14 at Nevada, 70-20 at Georgia, 38-0 at Indiana and 34-13 at New Mexico State. The level of competition explains some of those results, but the most recent loss to New Mexico State is more difficult to dismiss.
The Hilltoppers entered that game averaging 21.5 points and 343.5 total yards per contest while allowing 41.0 points and 439.0 yards. Western Kentucky was producing 212.8 passing yards and 130.8 rushing yards per game. The offense has shown occasional explosiveness, but it hasn’t consistently compensated for the problems on defense.
Home field is the strongest argument for Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers’ only victory came in Bowling Green, while Missouri State has faced difficulties away from home. Still, laying points with a team that has lost four of five and has been outscored by significant margins requires confidence that its defense can suddenly improve. The current matchup doesn’t provide enough evidence to make that assumption.
Missouri State vs Western Kentucky Picks and Predictions
Pick: Missouri State +1.5
Missouri State +1.5 is my side pick. This number essentially asks us to determine which team is more likely to win, and the Bears have shown more encouraging signs against quality competition. Missouri State was competitive deep into its 34-24 loss at ranked SMU, while Western Kentucky enters after losing 34-13 to New Mexico State. The Hilltoppers have surrendered at least 34 points in four of five games and have yet to beat an FBS opponent. Getting points with Missouri State is preferable to laying them with a Western Kentucky team that hasn’t demonstrated enough defensive consistency.
Pick: Under 55.5
The Under 55.5 is the total pick. Western Kentucky’s defense creates obvious Over concerns, but its offense has also been held to 14, 20, zero and 13 points in its four losses. Missouri State’s recent road trends also lean heavily toward lower-scoring games, with the Under cashing in five of its last seven away contests. Western Kentucky should be more competitive at home than it was against several difficult September opponents, but neither offense has been consistent enough to justify needing nearly eight touchdowns to beat this number.
Final Picks: Missouri State +1.5 and Under 55.5
