New Mexico State vs Sam Houston Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 21 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/19/2026, 12:08 AM ET

You know what I love about Wednesday night college football? You can sit down to watch two teams with three wins between them, and somehow it still turns into an interesting betting argument. New Mexico State heads to Huntsville, Texas, to face Sam Houston on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET. New Mexico State is favored by 2.5 points at DraftKings, with the total sitting at 47.5. That’s not much of a spread, and I can understand why. Neither team has given us much reason to trust it. The Aggies just got knocked around by FIU, while Sam Houston has been having trouble winning anything. Somebody’s got to win Wednesday. I just wouldn’t expect a masterpiece. Check out our free college football picks for more predictions throughout the season.

New Mexico State Needs To Find Some Offense

New Mexico State is 2-4, and the Aggies are coming off a 22-3 loss to FIU on October 7. Three points. That’s a pretty miserable evening, especially when you’ve had time to prepare. The Aggies couldn’t get anything going through the air, and FIU kept making them work for every yard. New Mexico State has had its moments this season, but consistency hasn’t been one of them. The Aggies are coming off a longer break than Sam Houston, so at least they’ve had time to get healthy and figure a few things out. Whether that makes much difference remains to be seen.

The passing game has been a problem. New Mexico State is averaging 198.3 passing yards per game, and the quarterbacks have combined for four touchdown passes against seven interceptions. That’s not a good ratio. The Aggies have been turning the ball over too often, and they’re not getting enough big plays to make up for it. Against FIU, their two quarterbacks combined for just 123 passing yards and two interceptions. You can’t win many football games like that. Sam Houston’s defense hasn’t been anything special, so this is a chance for New Mexico State to get the offense moving. But I’d like to see it before I start believing it.

The Aggies have been trying to find some consistency at quarterback, and that’s made it difficult to build any rhythm. A few injuries haven’t helped. Running back R. Burton and tight end R. Lotten have been listed as questionable with undisclosed injuries, and kicker I. Uvaydov has also been dealing with an issue. Those aren’t necessarily game-changing absences, but New Mexico State isn’t deep enough to shrug off missing offensive pieces. The Aggies need to run the football, avoid turnovers, and make Sam Houston earn its points. If they start throwing interceptions again, they’re going to make this a lot harder than it needs to be.

Sam Houston Has Been Looking For Answers

Sam Houston is 1-5, and the Bearkats haven’t had much fun this season. They’ve struggled to move the football, struggled to finish drives, and haven’t been getting enough stops when they need them. Their most recent game was against Western Kentucky on October 14, another Conference USA matchup that gave them a chance to turn things around. But the Bearkats are still sitting on one win, and that’s not where anybody expected to be halfway through October. The good news? They’re at home. The bad news? They haven’t been particularly convincing there, either.

The Bearkats have had trouble putting together complete drives. They’ll pick up a couple of first downs, get near midfield, and then something goes wrong. A penalty, a sack, a missed throw. You know the routine. New Mexico State’s defense has had its own problems, so Sam Houston should have some opportunities. But neither offense has been reliable enough to make me think we’re getting a 35-31 shootout. The team that protects the football and wins field position is probably going to be the one that walks away happy.

Sam Houston has been dealing with some injuries at tight end, with B. Kuhl out for the season and M. Whisner listed as questionable. That’s not ideal for an offense that needs all the help it can get. The Bearkats need better quarterback play and more consistency from the running game. They also need to avoid falling behind early. This isn’t a team built to throw the ball 45 times and come roaring back from a two-touchdown deficit. If Sam Houston can keep things close into the fourth quarter, the home crowd might actually become a factor. But they’ve got to give those fans something worth cheering about first.

New Mexico State vs Sam Houston Picks and Predictions

New Mexico State -2.5 (-110)

I’m taking New Mexico State, although I can’t say I’m particularly excited about it. The Aggies have been inconsistent, and that 22-3 loss to FIU was ugly. But Sam Houston is 1-5, and I haven’t seen enough from the Bearkats’ offense to trust them even at home. New Mexico State has had extra time to prepare, and I think that helps. The Aggies don’t need to score 35 points here. They need to avoid the turnovers that hurt them against FIU and find a way to get into the end zone a few times. Sam Houston could absolutely win this game. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit. But at less than a field goal, I’ll take the Aggies.

Under 47.5 Points (-110)

I’m going under 47.5. Neither offense has been doing much lately, and New Mexico State just scored three points in its last game. Sam Houston hasn’t been much better. I know bad defenses can make ordinary offenses look pretty good, and that’s the danger here. One or two turnovers could give somebody a short field and push the score up. But I don’t see either team putting together five or six touchdown drives. This feels more like a game where somebody wins 24-17 or 27-17, and everybody goes home wondering why they spent three hours watching it. I’ll take the under.

Final Picks: New Mexico State -2.5 (-110) and Under 47.5 Points (-110)
