North Carolina vs TCU Key Matchups and Game Preview

North Carolina continues to make headlines for all of the wrong reasons during the offseason, but a strong defensive performance is expected out of the gate. Even with all of last year's turmoil during a 4-8 season, Bill Belichick was able to attract a top-25 class of transfers and recruits to Chapel Hill during the offseason. Per 247Sports, North Carolina's incoming talent ranks No. 22 in the country and was the third-best in the ACC. New offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has been brought in to lead the Tar Heels' attack after previously serving as Arkansas' interim head coach for most of last season following Sam Pittman's firing in late September.

There are doubts about Petrino's ability to turn this offense around, but North Carolina's defense probably isn't getting some of the recognition it deserved from last season. With very little help from the offense, the Tar Heels' defense only allowed 4.94 yards per play last season, which was 24th in the country. They only allowed 40 explosive plays of 20-plus yards, which was the 11th-fewest in the nation. Seven of North Carolina's first nine games stayed under the total last year before a flurry of late-season over results once the season had already unraveled.

North Carolina and TCU Quarterback Battles

Both teams will be breaking in new quarterbacks in this contest. Former Wisconsin and Maryland transfer Billy Edwards is expected to get the nod for UNC after missing all of last season with a torn PCL, which is a concern right off the bat considering the Tar Heels are replacing the entire offensive line. TCU made an eyebrow-raising move, bringing Jaden Craig from Harvard to Fort Worth. Craig was one of the best quarterbacks in the country at the FCS level last year, but Josh Hoover, now at Indiana with the defending champs, left some big shoes to fill in the Horned Frogs' offense. TCU is only expecting to bring three starters back and 44 percent of its production from last year's offense, plus the Horned Frogs will be introducing a new offensive coordinator in Gordon Sammis.

The spread market has stayed remarkably stable, with TCU drawing between 77 and 80 percent of tickets and 85 to 89 percent of dollars across nearly every update dating back to August 20. The line has held mostly between TCU -7.5 and -7.5 with juice fluctuating from -102 up to -118 on the Horned Frogs' side, before settling near a pick'em juice split heading into game week.

The total has told a clearer story, with under support building steadily from 88 percent of tickets back on August 11 to 94 percent of tickets in the most recent update on August 24. Two updates on August 20 did show the over drawing 58 percent of tickets and 75 percent of dollars, but the market has since shifted firmly back toward the under, with the number holding at 47.5.

UNC and TCU Key Injuries and Things To Know

North Carolina's defensive coordinator Stephen Belichick has been away from the program for most of fall camp, which likely means the elder Belichick has spent more time overseeing the defense in recent weeks. UNC will have plenty of hurdles to overcome this season, but the defense should be somewhat ready for this one. Last year's 48-14 result in favor of TCU looks lopsided, but two of the Horned Frogs' touchdowns were scored by the defense. As long as Edwards protects the ball better than Gio Lopez did last season, with one fumble and one interception on just ten pass attempts, the Tar Heels' defense should be good enough to keep this game closer than the final score last year suggested.

North Carolina and TCU Side and Over/Under Picks

  • Spread Pick: North Carolina +7.5
  • Total Pick: Under 47.5

Some early money has shown on the under in this Week 0 clash, and that lines up with North Carolina's defensive profile from a season ago. With Edwards expected to protect the football better than last year's quarterback situation and Belichick's defense trending toward being prepared, the Tar Heels have enough to keep this one within the number.

North Carolina vs TCU Final Score Prediction

A defense-first approach from North Carolina against a TCU offense breaking in a new quarterback and coordinator points toward a competitive, lower-scoring result in Dublin.

  • Final Score Prediction: TCU 20, North Carolina 14
