The Tar Heels opened the year with a 48-14 loss to TCU, while the 49ers were outmatched in a 34-11 defeat to Appalachian State. Both teams are 0-1 and desperate to bounce back after rough starts. North Carolina Preview

North Carolina enters this matchup after being dominated by TCU, giving up 34 points in the first half alone. Quarterback Conner Harrell threw for 142 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but the offense struggled to sustain drives. Caleb Hood had just 31 rushing yards on 10 carries, leaving the Tar Heels without a consistent ground game. Wideout Jordan Shipp provided the lone bright spot with 84 receiving yards.

Defensively, the Tar Heels were gashed for 48 points and over 500 total yards, including 314 through the air. Missed tackles made it easy for TCU to dictate the tempo. Macyo Williams recorded the team’s only sack, but the pass rush lacked consistency. For North Carolina to avoid another lopsided loss, the defense must create turnovers and keep the 49ers from controlling time of possession.

Charlotte Preview

Charlotte also had a rough opener, falling 34-11 against Appalachian State. Conner Harrell threw for 103 yards and a touchdown, but the offense managed just one score before garbage time. Running back CJ Stokes paced the ground game with 49 yards on 15 carries, while Justin Olson added 56 yards receiving on two catches. The unit struggled to finish drives and convert third downs.

Defensively, Charlotte gave up 34 points and had trouble containing Appalachian State’s rushing attack. Linebacker Andrew Simpson led the way with 11 tackles, and Kadin Schmitz added nine stops, but the front seven allowed consistent yardage. The 49ers need to improve tackling in open space and find ways to pressure the quarterback after recording no sacks in Week 1.
