Northern Illinois vs UNLV Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 31 2026
Northern Illinois is still looking for its first win. Seven games, seven losses, and now the Huskies have to travel to Las Vegas after allowing 56 points to Hawaii. That’s a pretty miserable way to spend Halloween weekend. UNLV hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire either, but the Rebels have four wins and have already beaten California and North Dakota State. On paper, this is a mismatch. The interesting question is whether UNLV can put enough points on the board to justify a big spread. Be ready for the college football betting action with our free college football picks.
Northern Illinois visits Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 PM ET on CBS Sports Network. At the time of this writing, I couldn’t verify a current sportsbook spread or total. My betting thresholds are UNLV -17.5 or better and Under 55.5 or higher. Allegiant Stadium is enclosed, so outside temperature, wind, and precipitation shouldn’t affect the game.
Northern Illinois Is Still Searching for Answers
Northern Illinois is 0-7 overall and 0-3 in Mountain West play after losing 56-21 to Hawaii on Saturday. The Huskies have lost by at least 18 points in six of their seven games. Their only close result was a 28-24 loss to Illinois State back in September. Since then, Arizona, Georgia State, Air Force, Wyoming, and Hawaii have all beaten them comfortably. Northern Illinois is 0-4 on the road, and the Huskies have struggled to compete for four quarters against almost everybody.
The offense has been a major problem. Northern Illinois has scored 106 points in seven games, an average of just over 15 per contest. The Huskies managed only seven rushing yards against Iowa and have struggled to establish a consistent running game against stronger opponents. They did throw for 320 yards against Georgia State and 255 against Arizona, but those performances didn’t translate into victories. UNLV’s defense has been inconsistent, so Northern Illinois should find some opportunities. The problem is finishing drives. The Huskies can’t afford to settle for field goals or turn the ball over in scoring territory.

Defensively, Northern Illinois has been overwhelmed. The Huskies have allowed 270 points in seven games, an average of nearly 39. Hawaii just gained 504 yards and scored 56, including 35 unanswered points after the game was tied at 14. That’s the kind of defensive collapse that makes it difficult to trust an underdog. UNLV hasn’t been particularly explosive every week, but the Rebels have enough offensive ability to exploit a defense that’s been giving up big plays. Northern Illinois needs to tackle better and avoid letting UNLV build an early lead.
UNLV Has a Chance to Get Back on Track
UNLV is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Mountain West play after losing 41-31 at Air Force on October 17. The Rebels had a bye week, which should help them prepare for a Northern Illinois team that’s been struggling badly. UNLV has beaten Hawaii, Akron, California, and North Dakota State this season. The Rebels are 2-1 at home, and Allegiant Stadium should provide a comfortable setting. This is the kind of game UNLV needs to win if it wants to remain competitive in the Mountain West.
The offense has been inconsistent, but there have been some encouraging performances. UNLV scored 39 against California, 38 at Akron, and 31 at Air Force. The Rebels also managed only 13 against North Dakota State and six against North Texas, so the offense hasn’t been reliable every week. Northern Illinois has been allowing nearly 39 points per game, which should provide opportunities. UNLV needs to establish the run and avoid turnovers. If the Rebels can control possession, they should be able to move the football against a defense that’s struggled all season.
Defensively, UNLV has been better than Northern Illinois, although that’s not exactly a high bar. The Rebels held Hawaii to six, Akron to ten, and North Dakota State to seven. Those are impressive performances. But North Texas scored 44 and Air Force put up 41, so the defense has also had some rough afternoons. Northern Illinois hasn’t been productive enough offensively to exploit every weakness, and UNLV should be able to force the Huskies into difficult third downs. The Rebels need to get pressure on the quarterback and prevent explosive passing plays. If they do that, this should be a comfortable home victory.
Northern Illinois vs UNLV Picks and Predictions
UNLV -17.5 or Better
I’ll lay up to 17.5 with UNLV. Northern Illinois hasn’t won a game, has lost six of seven by at least 18 points, and just gave up 56 to Hawaii. That’s a difficult team to back, even with a big spread. UNLV has been inconsistent, but the Rebels have beaten better opponents and should be able to control the game at home. The concern is UNLV’s offense, which has occasionally disappeared against stronger defenses. But Northern Illinois hasn’t shown it can consistently stop anybody. I expect the Rebels to win by three touchdowns if they avoid turnovers.
Under 55.5 or Higher
I’m taking Under 55.5 if that number becomes available. Northern Illinois has been averaging just over 15 points per game, and UNLV has held several opponents to ten or fewer. The Rebels should score, but they haven’t been consistently explosive enough for me to expect 45 or 50 points. The danger is Northern Illinois’s defense giving up quick touchdowns or turnovers creating short fields. That’s a legitimate concern after the Hawaii game. But I think UNLV controls possession and keeps the Huskies from contributing much offensively. Something around 34-10 makes sense.
Final Picks: UNLV -17.5 or better and Under 55.5 or higher
