In Saturday night college football action, the Sam Houston Bearkats will travel to Veterans Memorial Stadium to tackle the Troy Trojans. Make sure you are ready for all the football action with our college football picks. Not much went right for Sam Houston in head coach Phil Longo’s first year on the job. The Bearkats (2-10) won just one Conference USA game and averaged a shade below 18 points. Longo upgraded the wide receiver room with some Power Four talent and the offense should be better.

Sam Houston has more issues on the defensive side of the ball. The unit finished last in the country in yards allowed and surrendered 37.8 points per contest. The Bearkats hit the transfer portal to beef up the interior of the defensive line and that will help the back seven.

Troy Preview

The Troy Trojans have won eight Sun Belt championships since 2024 and lost to James Madison in the title game a season ago. Troy needed to improve an offense that ranked worst in the conference and hired OC Adam Austin, who directed the highest scoring offensive attack at the FCS level in 2025. The Trojans will play a much more uptempo style, but they lost their top six wide receivers. Quarterbacks Goose Crowder and Tucker Gilcrease return and give Austin options at the most important position.

Troy ranked third in the conference in total defense and held opponents to 23.9 points per game. The linebacking corps should be good and EDGE Donnie Smith led the conference with 11 sacks. The defense benefited from playing inferior offenses and it remains to be seen how they will fare this year.
