San Jose State vs USC Key Matchups and Game Preview

Lincoln Riley and the Trojans still have a lot to learn about traveling in the Big Ten, going 1-5 against the spread away from home last year, but it appears that USC did make one notable adjustment in 2025 while playing in its new environment. Recognizing that the college football season has transformed from a 12-game sprint to a potential 16-game marathon if you make a deep playoff run, several of the country's top teams have turned the tempo down a notch. Ohio State and Notre Dame were at the forefront of the slow-it-down movement, and Riley joined them last season. The Trojans' offense went from averaging 70.2 plays per game in 2024 to 66.0 plays per game last year, and their average time between plays rose from 25.9 seconds to 27.3 seconds.

USC opened last season with a pair of lopsided wins over Missouri State and Georgia Southern, but in the end, the Trojans went 3-8 against the spread after those two wins, a trend worth remembering given the size of Monday's number.

Trojans Offensive Tempo and Personnel

USC is expected to bring back 15 starters from last year's squad, including quarterback Jayden Maiava, but the losses at receiver are significant. Makai Lemon caught 79 passes for 1,156 yards with 13 touchdowns last season and was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Eagles, while Ja'Kobi Lane, who had 49 catches with four touchdowns at USC last year, has been turning heads with the Ravens in NFL training camp. Maiava is a talented quarterback and appears to be a great fit in Riley's system, but the Trojans still need to replace a pair of bonafide NFL receivers. New defensive coordinator Gary Patterson has been brought in to lead USC's defense, replacing former defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, who returned to his alma mater Penn State. Patterson has worked in a consulting role with Texas and Baylor over the past few seasons after his lengthy run with TCU.

Spartans Outlook

On the San Jose State side, Ken Niumatalolo has his work cut out for him. The Spartans are only expected to return 24 percent of their production from last year, including just two projected starters. Former quarterback Walker Eget has left for Duke, and Hawaiian transfer Luke Weaver will get the nod for the opener against the Trojans. San Jose State held Texas to 38 points in Week 2 last season as a 36.5-point underdog, and while many of the players involved in that game are no longer with the program, Niumatalolo and his coaching staff showed they can make life difficult for a superior opponent. The Longhorns only had 18 first downs in that contest and time of possession was almost dead-even, though San Jose State did turn the ball over four times.

The spread market has moved noticeably over the past several days. USC's ticket and dollar support has cooled from a high of 72 percent of tickets and 74 percent of dollars down to as low as 57 percent of tickets, before climbing back to 62 percent in the most recent updates. The number itself has held mostly steady between USC -38.5 at -102 and -105, with occasional dips to -115 juice on the Trojans' side.

The total has stayed extremely lopsided toward the over throughout the process, with over support hitting 100 percent of tickets on multiple dates in early August before settling into the high-80s and low-90s in the most recent updates. The number has fluctuated between 59.5 and 60.5, with juice landing at a balanced -110 on both sides in the latest reading.

SJSU and USC Key Injuries and Things To Know

USC's defensive coordinator change is a key storyline entering this game, with Gary Patterson taking over after D'Anton Lynn's departure to Penn State. Meanwhile, San Jose State's roster turnover is extensive, with the Spartans only returning 24 percent of last year's production and two projected starters, including a new starting quarterback in Luke Weaver replacing Walker Eget. It is worth noting that San Jose State's defensive effort against Texas last season, despite being a 36.5-point underdog, showed the program's ability to compete against a stronger roster when execution is sound.

San Jose State vs USC Side and Over/Under Picks

  • Spread Pick: San Jose State +38.5
  • Total Pick: Under 59.5

Riley recognizes that he has a playoff-caliber roster, but in order to survive the grind of the Big Ten schedule, he probably needs to apply some brakes in these early-season contests, which supports staying away from laying such a large number. If Weaver can protect the ball and avoid gifting the Trojans easy points, the final score should stay under the lofty total.

USC vs San Jose State Final Score Prediction

USC's talent advantage still points toward a comfortable win, but Riley's tempo approach and San Jose State's history of competing against superior rosters support a final margin closer than the current number.

  • Final Score Prediction: USC 45, San Jose State 10
