South Alabama vs Marshall Picks and Predictions for Tuesday October 20 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/19/2026, 12:08 AM ET

Did you see what South Alabama did to Arkansas State? Fifty-six points. And the funny thing is, the Jaguars almost needed every one of them. They won 56-49. A hundred and five points between two football teams. Somebody ought to check whether either defensive coordinator got home safely. Now South Alabama heads to Huntington to play Marshall, which just turned the ball over six times in a loss to Coastal Carolina. Six turnovers! That’s not a typo. The Jaguars and Thundering Herd meet Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN2. South Alabama has been favored by around three points, with the total moving between 60.5 and 62.5. The forecast is calling for temperatures in the low 50s, dry conditions, and light winds. Nothing there that should keep either offense from doing its thing. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more predictions throughout the season.

South Alabama Has Been Scoring Like Crazy

South Alabama is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt. The Jaguars have won two straight, and they’ve scored 108 points in those games. One hundred and eight! They beat ULM 52-35 and Arkansas State 56-49. That’s some serious offense. They’ve also beaten Southeastern Louisiana and Ohio, while losing to Tulane and Kentucky. The loss to Tulane was only 28-24, so South Alabama has shown it can compete with decent teams. The Jaguars are 1-2 on the road, but that win at Arkansas State was impressive from an offensive standpoint. Defensively? Well, that’s another conversation.

South Alabama is averaging 38.8 points per game. That’s a lot of scoring, and the Jaguars have been getting big plays from just about everywhere. Their offensive line was named to the Joe Moore Midseason Honor Roll, which tells you they’ve been doing something right up front. But here’s the problem. The defense is allowing 34.5 points per game. That’s not good. The Jaguars have been winning shootouts because their offense keeps scoring, but you can’t count on putting up 50 every week. Marshall has struggled offensively, so maybe this is the game where South Alabama’s defense finally gets a chance to breathe. Or maybe the Herd finds a way to make it another wild Tuesday night.

The Jaguars have been getting strong quarterback play and plenty of production from their running backs. Their offense ranks among the better teams nationally in explosive plays, and that’s why they’ve been able to score so quickly. They don’t need 12-play drives to get into the end zone. One missed tackle and somebody’s gone. South Alabama also has a plus-eight turnover margin, one of the better marks in the country. That’s important against Marshall, which just gave the ball away six times. The Jaguars have been taking advantage of mistakes, and the Herd has been making plenty of them. That’s a pretty good combination if you’re backing South Alabama.

Marshall Needs To Stop Giving The Ball Away

Marshall is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Sun Belt play. The Thundering Herd have lost two straight conference games, including a 27-21 loss to Coastal Carolina on October 10. And I’ll tell you what. It’s hard to win a football game when you turn the ball over six times. Marshall did exactly that against Coastal Carolina, with four of those giveaways coming in the first half. Four! You can draw up all the plays you want, but if you keep handing the other team the football, none of it matters. The Herd are 2-1 at home, so at least they’ve been better in Huntington. But they need a much cleaner game Tuesday.

Marshall is averaging 22 points per game and allowing 33.7. That’s not a combination that’s going to win many games in the Sun Belt. The offense has been inconsistent, and the defense has had trouble stopping big plays, especially through the air. That’s a problem against South Alabama. The Jaguars have been one of the more explosive offenses in the country, and Marshall’s secondary has been giving up too many long gains. The Herd need to keep everything in front of them and force South Alabama to put together long drives. If they start giving up 40-yard passes and 30-yard runs, this could get ugly. On the other hand, South Alabama’s defense hasn’t been much better. Marshall should have chances to score if it can hang onto the football.

The biggest issue for Marshall has been quarterback play and ball security. The Herd have had too many drives end with turnovers, and that puts the defense in terrible positions. Their running game has shown some life, but they haven’t been able to lean on it consistently. Against South Alabama, Marshall needs to establish the run and keep the Jaguars’ offense off the field. That’s probably the best way to stay competitive. The Herd also need better tackling in the secondary. South Alabama has been turning short gains into long touchdowns, and Marshall can’t afford to let that happen. The home crowd should help, but it won’t mean much if the Herd keep giving the ball away.

South Alabama vs Marshall Picks and Predictions

South Alabama -3 (-110)

I’m taking South Alabama, and I’m not overthinking this one. The Jaguars are scoring nearly 39 points per game, and Marshall is allowing almost 34. That’s a matchup I like. South Alabama has also been taking care of the football, while Marshall just turned it over six times. Now, I know the Jaguars’ defense has been terrible at times. Arkansas State scored 49 on them, and that’s not something you can just ignore. Marshall could certainly put up 30 if it gets things going. But the Herd haven’t been nearly as explosive offensively, and they’ve been making too many mistakes. South Alabama’s offensive line has been playing well, and the Jaguars have more ways to score. At three points, I’ll lay it with the road team.

Over 62.5 Points

I’m going over 62.5, and I know that’s a pretty big number for a Tuesday night Sun Belt game. But have you watched South Alabama lately? The Jaguars just played games with 87 and 105 combined points. Their offense is scoring like crazy, and their defense is giving up almost as much. Marshall hasn’t been putting up big numbers, but the Herd are facing a defense that’s allowing 34.5 points per game. That’s an opportunity. The thing that worries me is Marshall’s offense. If the Herd keep turning the ball over, South Alabama might win 38-17 and leave us short of the number. But turnovers can also give the Jaguars short fields, and that could push the score up in a hurry. I can see South Alabama winning something like 38-28 or 41-27. Either one gets us there. Give me the over.
