South Carolina State enters this Week 2 matchup at 1-0 after edging out Wofford 16-15 in the opener. Quarterback William Atkins IV finished 17-of-33 for 175 yards with no touchdowns, and the offense looked inconsistent despite moving the ball in spots. KZ Adams led the backfield with 50 rushing yards on 15 carries, while Jalen Johnson hauled in six catches for 93 yards. The Bulldogs didn’t turn the ball over but failed to convert key red zone chances, settling for field goals and leaving the door open late. The Bulldogs’ defense held Wofford to just 15 points but gave up multiple chunk plays through the air. Linebacker Jordan Franklin recorded seven tackles, and defensive end Mike Lunz added two sacks. While the front seven was able to generate some pressure, coverage breakdowns on third down kept Wofford in the game. That type of performance won’t hold up against an SEC offense with elite athletes and tempo.

South Carolina also comes in at 1-0 following a 24-11 win over Virginia Tech in Columbia. LaNorris Sellers threw for 209 yards and a touchdown on just 19 attempts, and looked calm in the pocket while spreading the ball efficiently. Oscar Adaway III led the team with 60 rushing yards on 14 carries, and freshman receiver Nyck Harbor made the biggest splash with three receptions for 99 yards and a score. The offense wasn’t explosive for four quarters, but it finished drives and limited mistakes.
The Gamecocks’ defense was the difference last week, holding Virginia Tech to 11 points and under 300 total yards. Linebacker Fred Johnson paced the unit with 10 tackles, while Jatius Geer brought heat off the edge with a sack. South Carolina was disciplined in its assignments and didn’t allow a single play over 25 yards. The secondary played tight coverage and will have another chance to dominate against a limited Bulldogs passing game.

Pick: South Carolina’s defense should force multiple three-and-outs and short fields for Sellers and the offense. With the size mismatch in the trenches and more explosive athletes across the board, the Gamecocks should cover comfortably by halftime. The only real question is how long the starters stay in.
