Stanford vs Louisville Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 31 2026
Stanford has won two straight, and somebody is bound to point that out when they see Louisville favored by three touchdowns. Fair enough. The Cardinal just beat NC State 31-28, and winning close conference games is better than losing them. But here’s what bothers me. Stanford has looked like two completely different football teams depending on where it’s playing. At home, the Cardinal can compete. On the road against a quality opponent? That’s been a much uglier story. The college football season is in full swing so you should make sure you are ready for all the games with our free college football picks.
Stanford heads to L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 PM ET on ACC Network. Louisville is favored by approximately 21 to 21.5 points, with the total at 62.5. The stadium is open-air, and the early forecast calls for temperatures around 70 to 73 degrees, winds near 6 mph with gusts around 10, and a precipitation chance of roughly 6% to 11%. Weather shouldn’t have much influence on this matchup.
Stanford Has Been Better at Home Than on the Road
Stanford is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in ACC play after beating NC State 31-28 on Friday night. The Cardinal have won two straight, including a 34-7 victory over Elon, and they’re starting to show some offensive improvement. But Stanford’s road results are difficult to ignore. The Cardinal lost 35-7 at Duke, 57-3 at Wake Forest, and 58-7 at Notre Dame. That’s three road losses by a combined 133 points. Not exactly the kind of résumé that makes you eager to back them against a three-touchdown favorite.
Stanford’s offense was much better against NC State. The Cardinal threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns, while the running game produced a 150-yard performance from its leading rusher. That’s encouraging, especially after scoring only three at Wake Forest and seven at Notre Dame. The question is whether Stanford can reproduce that production away from home. Louisville has been vulnerable defensively at times, but the Cardinals have also faced better offenses than Stanford. The Cardinal need to establish the run and protect the quarterback. If they become one-dimensional, Louisville should be able to get pressure and force mistakes.

Defensively, Stanford has been a mess against stronger competition. Miami scored 45, Duke scored 35, Wake Forest scored 57, and Notre Dame put up 58. Louisville isn’t Notre Dame, but the Cardinals have enough offensive ability to exploit those weaknesses. Stanford needs to prevent explosive plays and force Louisville to sustain drives. That’s been a difficult assignment for the Cardinal, particularly on the road. They also need to avoid turnovers, because giving Louisville short fields could turn this into another blowout.
Louisville Has Been Better Than Its Record Suggests
Louisville is 4-3 overall and 3-2 in ACC play. The Cardinals have lost three games, but all three were decided by three points. Ole Miss beat them 41-38, Wake Forest won 30-27, and NC State escaped with a 31-28 victory. That’s a pretty remarkable collection of close losses. Louisville has also beaten SMU 41-31, Florida State 44-20, and Syracuse 34-26. Those are quality offensive performances, and the Cardinals have had a bye week to prepare for Stanford.
Louisville’s offense has been productive against good competition. The Cardinals scored 41 against SMU, 44 against Florida State, and 34 at Syracuse. That’s exactly the kind of production that should worry Stanford. The Cardinal have been giving up huge numbers against stronger opponents, and Louisville has enough passing ability to attack that weakness. The Cardinals also need to establish their running game and avoid turnovers. Stanford has shown some improvement offensively, so Louisville can’t afford to give the Cardinal easy scoring opportunities.
The defense has been inconsistent, but Louisville has been much better at home than Stanford has been on the road. The Cardinals allowed 31 to SMU and 30 to Wake Forest, but they’ve also been able to create enough stops to win games. Stanford’s recent offensive improvement is worth respecting, particularly after the NC State victory. But the Cardinal haven’t demonstrated they can sustain that production away from home. Louisville should be able to control the line of scrimmage and force Stanford into difficult passing situations. That’s where the Cardinals can create separation.
Stanford vs Louisville Picks and Predictions
Louisville -21
I’ll lay 21 with Louisville, although I wouldn’t chase this much higher. Stanford has won two straight, and the Cardinal are coming off a good offensive performance against NC State. But those victories were at home. Stanford has lost its three road games against Duke, Wake Forest, and Notre Dame by an average of more than 44 points. That’s a terrible trend heading into Louisville. The Cardinals have scored at least 34 in three of their better conference performances, and they’ve had extra time to prepare. The concern is Stanford’s improved passing game creating enough points for a backdoor cover. But I think Louisville’s offense is too much. Give me the Cardinals to win comfortably.
Under 62.5
I’m taking Under 62.5. Louisville should score plenty, but Stanford’s offense has been much less effective on the road. The Cardinal scored seven at Duke, three at Wake Forest, and seven at Notre Dame. That’s 17 points in three road games. Louisville’s defense isn’t perfect, but it should be able to keep Stanford from putting up the kind of numbers it managed against NC State. The biggest danger is Louisville scoring 45 or 50 on its own, which is certainly possible against this defense. But I think Stanford struggles to reach 20, and something around 41-14 Louisville makes sense.
Final Picks: Louisville -21 and Under 62.5
