Texas Southern is looking to bounce back after a crushing 22-21 home loss to Prairie View A&M. The Tigers are 0-1 and now face a huge step up in competition as they head to Berkeley to take on California. Texas Southern Preview

Texas Southern had some flashes in its opener, especially from quarterback KJ Cooper, who completed 11 of 16 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. Running back Athean Renfro also chipped in with 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Tigers moved the ball well but couldn’t convert key possessions late, which ultimately cost them in a close SWAC game.

Defensively, Texas Southern gave up over 300 total yards to Prairie View and struggled with late-game stops. Linebacker Isaiah Bogerty led with 10 tackles, but the unit lacked pressure up front and didn’t register a sack. The challenge only gets tougher this week against a Power 5 offense that just lit up Oregon State. Texas Southern hasn’t fared well recently against FBS competition, and it’ll take a near-perfect game to keep this close.

California Preview

California rolled through Oregon State thanks to strong quarterback play from Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns in his debut. Brandon High Jr. added 41 yards and a score on the ground, while wide receiver Trond Grizzell led all pass catchers with 83 yards and a touchdown. The Golden Bears were efficient and explosive, averaging nearly 8 yards per pass attempt.
