The Citadel Bulldogs will take a short trip to Charlotte on Saturday to face the 49ers at Jerry Richardson Stadium at 3:30 PM on Saturday. This will be the second game of the year for the Citadel following a blowout road loss to Wofford a week ago. Charlotte will make its 2026 debut Saturday while looking to put last year’s struggles behind it.  Charlotte had a terrible showing last year, finishing 1-11 after ending the year on a 9-game losing streak. The Citadel Preview

The Citadel was completely outmatched last week, giving up 341 yards and 42 points after Wofford scored 21 points in each half. The Citadel offense moved the ball well, compiling 351 yards, but scored just 14 points after turning the ball over 3 times. Quentin Hayes led the show for the Citadel offense last week, completing 12 passes for 88 yards, and boasted a team-high 91 yards on 18 carries. Sebastian Boyle chipped in heavily with 11 yards and 2 touchdowns on 3 carries.

Charlotte Preview

Though both primary quarterbacks from a year ago are returning for Charlotte, the 49ers have named transfer Cole Gonzales as the starter for opening day. Gonzales will appear for his third team in his collegiate career this year after 118 yards on 11 completions last year at Pittsburgh, as he has compiled 6800 total yards in college. Grayson Loftis also returns this year after 1,415 yards and 8 scores on 128 completions, while Conner Harrell is back after 737 yards and 4 scores on 64 completions.

Charlotte will have the talent advantage, but The Citadel’s style of play could keep this matchup uncomfortable for a while.
