UMass vs UConn Picks and Predictions for Friday October 23 2026
UMass started the season 4-0. People were actually getting excited about Minutemen football. Then October arrived, and somebody apparently changed the locks on the end zone. Three straight losses, including a 25-18 overtime defeat at Buffalo Saturday. Now UMass heads to East Hartford to play UConn on Friday, October 23, 2026. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network from Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. UConn is laying around 16.5 points, with the total near 47.5. That’s a lot of points for a rivalry game, especially one that finished 47-42 last season. But UMass hasn’t been playing anything like the team that won its first four. UMass Needs To Find Its Offense Again
UMass is 4-3, with a 2-1 road record. The Minutemen opened by beating Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Stonehill, and Sacramento State. Not a bad start. Then Eastern Michigan came to Amherst and won 38-14. Miami (Ohio) followed with a 20-19 win, and Buffalo beat UMass 25-18 in overtime Saturday. Three losses in a row, and the Minutemen have scored only 51 points during that stretch. That’s 17 per game. They were scoring more than twice that during the winning streak. Something’s changed, and not for the better.
The offense hasn’t been finishing drives, and that’s putting too much pressure on the defense. UMass scored 37 at Rutgers in the opener and 35 at Sacramento State. So the Minutemen have shown they can move the ball away from home. But the last three opponents have done a better job keeping them from hitting big plays. Against Buffalo, UMass managed 18 points in regulation and overtime combined. The defense kept the game close enough to win, but close doesn’t help much when the offense can’t get another touchdown.
UMass needs better quarterback play and a running game that can take some pressure off the passing attack. The Minutemen have been relying too much on difficult third-down throws lately. Against UConn, that’s asking for trouble. The Huskies have been getting more aggressive defensively, and they’re capable of forcing turnovers. UMass also needs to avoid penalties that turn manageable drives into punts. A couple of mistakes might not matter against Stonehill. They matter quite a bit against a team that can put up 34 points.

UConn Is Starting To Figure Things Out
UConn is 3-3 and coming off a bye week. The Huskies beat Temple 34-20 on October 10, and that was probably their most complete performance of the season. They were tied up in a competitive game early, then took over in the fourth quarter. UConn forced turnovers, ran the football, and didn’t give Temple much room to breathe late. That’s the kind of game coach Jason Candle wants to see more often. Now the Huskies have had extra time to prepare for UMass, which should help.
UConn’s offensive line has been improving, and you could see it against Temple. The Huskies started getting decent rushing lanes, and suddenly the passing game looked a lot more comfortable. The defense was better after a shaky start, too. Temple scored two early touchdowns, but UConn allowed only six points the rest of the way. That’s a good adjustment. UMass hasn’t been scoring much lately, so the Huskies should be able to put pressure on the Minutemen without taking unnecessary chances.
Kalieb Osborne completed 74% of his passes against Temple for 257 yards and added a rushing touchdown. That’s a solid afternoon. Cyncir Bowers ran for 84 yards and a touchdown, and Trey Cornist broke off two runs of more than 40 yards. Kenji Christian added a 39-yard touchdown run but has been dealing with a leg injury, so his availability matters. UConn has enough backfield options to survive without one runner, but I’d still want to know who’s healthy Friday. The Huskies have been looking more comfortable offensively, and I think the extra week helps them.
UMass vs UConn Picks and Predictions
UMass +16.5 (-110)
I’m taking UMass and the points. Not because I think the Minutemen are playing good football. They aren’t. Three straight losses will tell you that. But 16.5 is a lot to lay with a UConn team that’s only 3-3. The Huskies looked good against Temple, and the extra rest helps, but I’m not ready to call them a three-touchdown favorite against everybody. UMass has won two road games, and this rivalry has produced some strange scores. I think UConn wins. I just don’t think the Huskies run away with it. Give me the Minutemen and the points.
Under 47.5 Points (-110)
I’m going under 47.5. UMass has scored 14, 19, and 18 in its last three games. That’s not much offense. UConn’s defense made good adjustments against Temple, and I think the Huskies can keep the Minutemen somewhere around 14 or 17 points. UConn should move the football, especially on the ground, but I don’t see a need for the Huskies to hurry if they get ahead. The danger is UMass turning it over and giving UConn short fields. That’s how a 27-14 game becomes 34-14 in a hurry. Still, I think this one stays under. Something like 27-16 works for me.
Final Picks: UMass +16.5 (-110) and Under 47.5 Points (-110)
