In Saturday night college football action, the Western Michigan Broncos will travel to Rice Stadium to take on the Rice Owls. The Broncos (1-1) won ten of their last 11 games to close last season, including a MAC Championship victory over Miami OH. Western Michigan was robbed on a hail mary in a season-opening loss at 16th ranked Michigan, but bounced back on Saturday with a 49-14 home victory versus FCS Monmouth.

Western Michigan led 21-0 at halftime behind a pair of Broc Lowry touchdown passes and a Jalen Buckley 1-yard touchdown run. Lowry finished the day with 212 passing yards and Buckley hit pay dirt three times. The Broncos were surprisingly outgained by a 431-414 margin, but forced two turnovers.

Rice Preview

The Rice Owls won five games in head coach Scott Abell’s first season and upgraded their roster through the transfer portal. The Owls (1-1) ranked near the bottom of the American Conference in total offense and are in search of their first winning season since 2014. On Saturday, Rice trailed by 42 points at halftime and managed just 128 yards of total offense during a 52-0 road loss against third ranked Notre Dame.

Rice averaged more than 200 yards per game on the ground a season ago, but was limited to 64 rushing yards (1.9 YPG) against the stout Fighting Irish defensive front. Senior QB Jacurri Brown completed 8-of-12 passes for 64 yards and added a team-high 32 rushing yards. The Owls converted just 2-of-12 third-down attempts and committed four turnovers.
